Since even before the Wright Brothers, there have been attempts—some with modest success—to build a flying car. Although a practical road, and airworthy vehicle looks no more likely than a century ago, planes that do the job of taxi cars may arrive soon. And while the U.S. has been a leader in “flying car” efforts over the years, it may not be the first place where service takes flight. Techonomy is a conference and digital media company exploring the intersection of tech, business and social progress.
About us
Techonomy’s name embodies our beliefs and our mission—it combines the words “technology” and “economy” because technology is a central part of the economy in which we operate and the society in which we live. We see technology as inextricably entwined with just about every activity that humans undertake, and seek as a company to help the world, and especially business leaders, take advantage of it. Techonomy casts its lens broadly across technology, business and society. We believe that all leaders should, in effect, become technologists. We seek conversation at the highest level about the potential for technology and business to drive social progress. We host conferences and create content to explore the pace of change, and what it means. We convene communities by hosting conferences, publishing articles and videos, working with partners in a myriad of ways, and advocating for greater understanding about the pace of change and what it means. For more information, please visit Techonomy.com, or our other social platforms.

As intermittent power sources, solar photovoltaic and wind energy require “baseline” power to fill in. That typically comes from traditional sources including coal, gas, and nuclear power. But utilities are increasingly exploring energy storage systems that charge up on renewable energy to provide that backup power instead. Lithium ion is the go-to technology for utility-scale batteries; however, it is an imperfect solution for long-duration energy storage, known as LDES. A report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office said that while lithium-ion batteries remain popular in the utility sector, high demand in other industries makes them an increasingly expensive solution. Also, the GAO reported other risks for grid operators, including fire and limited battery life. Perhaps most importantly, lithium-ion batteries do not have the storage capacity to last through the night or to ride out extended power outages. For the affluent adventurer, space offers a unique allure: exorbitant prices, stringent physical prerequisites, a scarce number of seats, and the compelling “overview effect.” Getting high above the Earth changes how we see everything from our own selfhood to borders, politics, and our interconnectedness. Space tourism provides an exceptionally rarefied experience for those who have already conquered Everest or explored Antarctica in luxury. While the sector has encountered significant financial and technical challenges, new companies are joining the fray, offering (comparatively) more affordable escapades for those willing to make a substantial investment. Snaking under city streets, behind residential drywall and into furnaces, ovens and other appliances, natural gas pipelines are a ubiquitous presence in U.S. buildings. The question of what to do with them as the planet warms has become a serious debate—dozens of U.S. cities and states have crafted plans to reduce reliance on natural gas, and more than 20 other states have passed laws to preempt that type of regulation. Now, utilities around the nation have begun testing a controversial idea aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of gas lines, while keeping them in place. Nearly 20 utilities have laid out plans to inject lines with a blend of gas and hydrogen, the latter of which emits no carbon dioxide (CO2)—a major greenhouse gas—when combusted. Testing such blends, these companies say, is an essential step towards understanding the practice, which they argue will help reduce emissions and fight climate change.
