TechWomen spotlights fellow Damilola Asaleye, who was recently featured in the Forbes Newsletter “Women Entrepreneurs Around The Globe Are Using Tech To Expand Their Reach, But Barriers To Financing Persist.” The feature highlights the green tech work of Ashdam Solar Company Limited, where Damilola serves as co-founder and Chief Operating Officer, as they pioneer sustainable energy solutions in Oyo State, Nigeria in an effort to close the gap for 93 million people who lack access to power. Damilola also runs the Ashdam Solar Academy, which trains renewable energy entrepreneurs, and Girls and Women Technological Empowerment Organisation - GWTEO, a nonprofit she founded to mentor girls and women in developing their tech leadership. The story also punctuates the broader trend among women entrepreneurs in low- and middle-income countries who are successfully utilizing technology to expand their businesses yet still face significant financial and legal barriers to growth, such as laws that prevent women from owning the very assets required for loan collateral. Organizations such as the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women are working to circumvent and undo these barriers with offerings such as the HerVenture mobile app and the Road to Growth training program, both which Damilola has utilized to further her work. “I see myself contributing to changing the world in a positive way. Every industry needs energy assets,” Asaleye explained in a Cherie Blair Foundation interview cited by Forbes. “So, I see my work in trying to reduce energy poverty as very critical.” Read the full feature here: https://lnkd.in/gd_UTvsw #TWIMPACT #womenwholead #exchangeourworld

Congratulations! Fellow Fatima-Zahra Benyaaqoub of Morocco coached youth team 3andiBlasti to third prize victory for Project Innovation at the prestigious FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Open European Championship (OEC) 2024 held in Bodø, Norway this spring. Fatima is founder and director of La Parenthèse Enchantée, a cultural and educational center that taught and lead 3andi Blasti to the world stage for their international victory. "What makes this project even more special is its noble objective: to empower refugee children to explore robotics through a kit adapted to their living conditions," Fatima shared in a celebratory post. "By winning this award, our young minds not only demonstrated their skills in science, technology, and engineering, but they also carried a message of hope and inclusion." The FLL is the largest international science and technology competition for children and youth. With a focus on merging art and technology, participants are tasked with a challenge called MASTERPIECE, engaging in research, problem-solving, coding and engineering. Part of the challenge involves programming a LEGO robot to navigate missions in a robot game and another is to complete a research project that identifies and solves a real-world problem. The competition is held in 110 countries, culminating in global tournaments that identify 50 final teams to present their work at the Open European Championship in Bodø. #TWIMPACT Https://https://lnkd.in/ebfDpCXw
