Preparing Black, Latino, & low-income students for top colleges & community-centered leadership since 2009.
About us
TeenSHARP is a nationwide learning community for Black, Latino, and low-income students that uses top college admissions as a lever to change the landscape of leadership in America. Our vision is that, one day, those who occupy our nation's highly-skilled jobs and most influential positions will reflect the rich diversity of the nation itself. In service of that vision, we prepare scholars to attend, thrive at, and graduate (with little or no debt) from top colleges. At these schools, diverse scholars access the social capital, academic rigor, and intellectual development they deserve—and which they can leverage to become community-minded change-makers on the path to fulfilling their highest potential. Since 2009, TeenSHARP has grown from serving 10 students in a church basement to hundreds of teens with virtual programs. More than 400 students have graduated from TeenSHARP in 12 years, going on to study at schools such as Yale, MIT, Princeton, Cornell, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt, Macalester, Pomona, Northeastern, and Swarthmore. The vast majority of TeenSHARP alumni complete college within four years (all do so within six) and graduate, on average, with $15,000 or less in student loan debt. We aim to serve another 2,025 students by 2025.

Full tuition at one of America’s top colleges can stretch to $80,000 or $90,000 per year. Now, imagine that times two. Helping Black, Latino, low-income, and first-generation scholars afford college is one of the greatest joys at TeenSHARP. This includes TeenSHARP alumni twins like Angela and Mayvis who with guidance from TeenSHARP, enrolled in prestigious and rewarding summer programs and took on leadership roles at school. “TeenSHARP was definitely a life-changer for me and my sister,” Mayvis said. Every college we ended up applying to, we wouldn’t have known about if it wasn’t for TeenSHARP. In the past, we thought even going to a state school would be a financially risky decision.” Double majoring in computer science and economics, Mayvis recently wrapped up her first year at Middlebury College in Vermont. Angela is pursuing the same double major at Barnard College in New York City where she matched through the highly-competitive QuestBridge process. Both young women are attending college on full scholarships. Embracing their individual paths was not easy, they said, but TeenSHARP helped. “TeenSHARP makes you feel comfortable and confident to try new things—to be a trailblazer in your family,” Angela said. “At first we were very skeptical about going out of state, but New York City and Vermont are not as far from Delaware as we thought. TeenSHARP opened the world up for us.” If you're a low-income high school senior with top grades, you don't want to miss the August 15th deadline to apply to TeenSHARP's STRIVER Program. While affirmative action made strides in increasing diversity on college campuses, it fell far short of meeting its intended goals. In “The End of Affirmative Action” documentary, featuring TeenSHARP, CBS Reports teamed up with independent journalist Soledad O’Brien and The Hechinger Report to examine the fog of uncertainty for students and administrators who say the decision threatens to unravel decades of progress. We’re proud that this impactful work won the Education Writers Association 2023 Visual Storytelling award. The barriers to admitting Black and Hispanic students to the nation’s most selective universities are numerous and well-known. Research shows Black and Hispanic students are far more likely to attend high-poverty schools and to have less access to core college preparatory classes in math and science. On average, underrepresented students are more likely to earn lower scores on standardized college admission tests such as the SAT and ACT due to the widening wealth gap. The results of these systemic inequalities show a concerning pattern: Black and Hispanic students are leaving college with higher amounts of student debt than white students, impacting both their college experiences and their future prospects. As we reflect on the Supreme Court’s decision to end affirmative action, our commitment to empowering high-achieving Black, Latino, and low-income students nationwide navigate the ever-changing college admissions landscape has only grown stronger. Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19th, marks a pivotal moment in American history—the day in 1865 when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. This day symbolizes the end of slavery in the United States and is a profound reminder of the resilience and enduring spirit of African Americans. For educators, this day can inspire curriculum development, community engagement, and reflection on policies to ensure a commitment to equity and inclusion. As you observe Juneteenth this week, we invite you to take the TeenSHARP Black History Challenge with us— a free, self-paced online course that aims to empower communities to deepen their knowledge of Black History and spark much-needed action on issues of race and social justice. From groundbreaking achievements to moments of resilience and resistance, this course sheds light on the often untold stories that have shaped our nation. 🔗 https://lnkd.in/ek9Uz89T #Juneteenth #BlackHistory #CollegeAdmissions #Education
