High performers are getting the lowest-quality feedback at work. And it’s worse for high-performing women. The findings in our recently released data report on performance feedback are eye-opening. Data from more than 20,000 performance reviews across 250+ companies showed: 💡 High performers receive the lowest-quality feedback, and high-performing women are the most impacted. 💡 Feedback often reinforces negative stereotypes, leading to harmful internalization—especially for those labeled as "unlikeable" or "underachievers." These insights could be critical to your talent retention strategy. Join Kieran Snyder, Hebba Youssef, and Candita Bryan, MBA on Monday, September 9th at 10:30 am PT / 1:30 pm ET as they discuss how to transform feedback into a tool that retains and empowers your top talent. 🎙️ Don’t miss this essential discussion—RSVP now! #PerformanceManagement  #PerformanceFeedback #EmployeeRetention

It’s time to change the game. Join Textio’s own Jackye Clayton and Jensen Harris as we turn those tired feedback clichés on their heads: Are you emotional or just a passionate, caring individual? Are you aggressive or simply direct and effective? Are you “not fun” or laser-focused on getting things done? At the Fixer Mixer, we’re transforming feedback into something empowering, something you can truly own. And of course, we’ll be doing it with great company, free bites, and some fabulous cocktails! If you’re attending HR Tech, don’t miss out! Swing by Hazel Coffee & Cocktails inside Mandalay Bay from 6pm-8pm on Wednesday, September 25. Have you ever been asked to “do more with less” at work? A not-so-controversial take: “do more with less” is a scam driving an epidemic of bad work and burnout. There, we said it. At some point, you literally can’t do more with less. And we believe that time is now. Managers, HR leaders, and nearly every employee is burned out. It’s never been more challenging to be a manager though: - Managers oversee 3x as many people as they did in 2017 - Managers have 51% more responsibilities than they can effectively manage - Managers spend an annual average of 210 hours on performance management — nearly 30 days out of the year - 59% of managers report spending a significant amount of time on “work to do work” - 62% of individual contributors don’t want to become managers - 1 in 5 current managers would prefer not to be a people manager, if they had a choice More of the same isn’t going to cut it anymore. So, today we’re embarking on our journey to do something about this mess. And the only way out is to do less. Textio is on a mission to make it radically easier to be a great manager and not burn out. We’re building tools to help you do less. Join us in the comments!

Creating more inclusive workplaces, one ally at a time

She "left it all on the field." He "thinks outside the box." These are examples of clichéd feedback. Where someone centers a piece of business jargon in a performance review. Textio's latest annual study about language bias in performance feedback is filled with insights about how feedback varies between different gender and racial identities. I was especially interested in one topic in the report: feedback grounded in cliché. Textio pointed out, “These generic phrases have been used so often in business contexts that they have lost a great deal of their meaning. Managers rely on these cliches as a fast shorthand that stands in for more detailed and specific feedback.” I’ll add that clichés can be challenging to understand if someone is an English language learner, a neuro-distinct individual with literal thinking tendencies, or unfamiliar with the cultural or sports reference. (As I wrote this post, I had to search online to learn what "left it all on the field" means.) Instead of using trite phrases to describe someone’s performance, let’s focus on detailed and specific feedback to help individuals learn and grow. — Video description: Karen Catlin is in her home office, with copies of her books on the table behind her. She says: Textio is a company that creates tools for inclusive writing, and they do an annual study about bias in performance reviews. Here’s something I learned from their latest report: the problem with using clichés. Like, she left it all on the field. Or, he thinks outside the box. These are shorthands for detailed and specific feedback, which is what people actually need to learn & grow. Plus, they can be difficult to understand for English language learners, neuro-distinct individuals with literal thinking tendencies, or people unfamiliar with the cultural or sports reference. (I had to look up what “left it all on the field” means.) Let’s skip the trite phrases and instead focus on detailed and specific feedback to help individuals learn and grow. --- This is an excerpt from my upcoming “5 Ally Actions” newsletter.
