Significant strides in global health: The World Health Organization reports a decrease in people at risk of trachoma – from 115.7 million in 2023 to 103.2 million as of July 2024. The Carter Center supports trachoma control in four of the 40 countries in need of interventions. Notably, we've helped eliminate trachoma as a public health problem in Ghana (2018) and Mali (2023). In 2023 alone, we contributed to 36% of all trachoma-related surgeries worldwide (47,275 out of 130,746). Proud to be on this mission to #beatNTDs. #GlobalHealth https://bit.ly/3LKml1W International Coalition for Trachoma Control

The Carter Center joined The Multifaith Initiative to End Mass Incarceration today to honor Freedom Summer, a voting campaign 60 years ago aimed at registering African American voters in Mississippi. Together, we hosted a #HumanRightsRoundtable of faith leaders, academics, activists, and advocates and reflected on the efforts of young leaders and the sacrifices they made, deepening our understanding of issues we must face together. We are committed to addressing challenges within the criminal legal system, particularly the adverse physical and mental health outcomes faced by Black and Brown communities in the Deep South. Carter Center Board Chair Jason Carter hosted Peace Corps staff and former volunteers at the Center last night: “It was my grandfather who told me to join the Peace Corps,” he said. “And you know what? I think he was a little jealous.” The Carter Center and Peace Corps share a rich history, beginning with President Carter’s mother, Lillian, who served as a health volunteer in India when she was in her late 60s. Jason Carter served in South Africa from 1998-2000, and his former country director was in the room last night. Many Carter Center staff have also served in the #PeaceCorps.
