Learn the story behind our beginnings and get your tickets to help restore The Carriage House!
Do you know the rich history of The Indianapolis Propylaeum Carriage House? When Mary Stewart Carey was elected President of the Propylaeum in 1924, she used her creative thinking to fill the whole property – one such idea was using our carriage house as the original home for The Children's Museum of Indianapolis. After the Children's Museum moved to Garfield Park, The Junior League of Indianapolis used the space for their shop. In 1934, artist Elmer Taflinger used the space for his studio and occupied it until he died in 1981. Portrait painter John Dickhaus used the space for his studio for the next 25 years. In the early 2000s, the WBE architecture firm's offices filled the space. Eventually, the Propylaeum reclaimed the space for an additional area to carry out programming focused on Women’s Leadership and Arts & Culture. Please join us on Friday, September 13 at our inaugural Delaware Street Derby as we Race to Restore the Carriage House! We are working on numerous restoration projects in the carriage house and can use your support to get these projects over the finish line!
