The 45th annual PNAA National Convention was last weekend, and we were fortunate enough to have our Co-Founder Bonnie Barnes attend! During the event, the Philippine Nurses Association Maui Hawaii chapter was honored with the DAISY Health Equity Team Award for their incredible work supporting the Maui community around the fire. Congratulations to this amazing team!
About us
The Barnes Family started DAISY in 1999 to say a profound thank you to nurses for the extraordinary skill and compassion they provide patients and families every day. Our experience with nurses during son Patrick Barnes' eight week hospitalization showed us that direct care nurses do super-human work that is rarely recognized. We had no idea that today, more than 5,000 healthcare facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 32 other countries and territories would honor their nurses all year long with The DAISY Award. Over 2,100,000 nominations have been written, describing how a nurse has impacted a patient or family. Clearly, the Barnes Family are not the only people compelled to say thank you to nurses! The strategic value of this kind of meaningful recognition is now being proven in research study after study. Impacts include contribution to a healthy work environment, nurse satisfaction, compassion satisfaction, patient satisfaction, and cultural transformation. It's remarkable what happens when a healthcare organization focuses some attention on all the good that's going on. We also honor nursing students with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students and nursing faculty with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Faculty. Through our J. Patrick Barnes Grants, we support nursing research and EBP projects with grants to nurses.

Today, we would like to feature DAISY Honoree Breah Taylor. There is a homeless patient that frequents the ED at Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge Hospital. After his last visit, Breah started thinking about him even after her shift. Breah made a care bag for this patient filled with new clothes, hygiene items, gift cards, an umbrella, and an emergency blanket. She brought those items to work with her the next shift, but the patient had been discharged. The next time this patient was in the ED, Breah wasn’t there, but a co-worker called her to ask if she’d like to come in and give him the items. Breah asked the nurse to go ahead and give him the care package for her. The patient and staff cried when he was given the care package that Breah had made for him. The patient wrote a note to Breah that said, "Breah, I wish I knew what to say. No one has ever done something like this for me. I will never forget this for as long as I live. Thank you." The patient was grateful, and Breah changed his life despite not being there. Thank you, Breah, for showing your patient care and compassion. Congratulations on being a DAISY Honoree! Today, we would like to feature DAISY Honoree Zolly Corprew! When a Hispanic male patient in critical care struggled to understand his care plan. Zolly stepped in to clarify it, enabling him to make an informed decision to be intubated. Knowing this would render him unable to make further decisions, Zolly built a rapport with the patient, discovering his family was in Mexico and he had a young son, a local best friend, and an employer he wanted notified. Despite communication challenges, Zolly located the friend and, through them, contacted the patient’s family and employer. She provided crucial updates to the family, who couldn’t travel to the US, and informed the employer, who offered to cover memorial costs. Zolly's dedication ensured the patient's wishes were honored and provided comfort to his loved ones during a difficult time. Thank you, Zolly, for all you did for this patient and his family. Congratulations on being a DAISY Honoree. Read Zolly’s nomination story here: https://lnkd.in/gBj4zB86
