#OnThisDay in 1928, Salvador Dalí exhibited his first painting in the U.S. at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, PA. "The Basket of Bread" (1926) was one of three works on display. Painted when Dalí was only 22 years old, this piece marks a pivotal moment in his career. It gave the artist a sense of pride and accomplishment, feeling like he had mastered this painting style. Dalí was then able to freely pivot to entirely different, more provocative subject matters. #TheDali #SalvadorDali #Painting #TampaBay #Florida #Museum 🖼️ Collection of The Dalí Museum, St. Petersburg, FL (USA); Gift of A. It's official! Today is opening day of our new special exhibition, "Reimagining Nature: Dalí's Floral Fantasies." 🌷 Dalí once said, "The true painter must be able, with the most usual things to have the most unusual ideas." This exhibition presents three rarely displayed botanical print suites made by Dalí between 1968 and 1972, highlighting some of the most treasured works on paper in the Museum's permanent collection. On display together at the Museum for the first time in two decades, these prints showcase the power of transformation as Dalí reimagined traditional 18th and 19th century illustrations of fruits and flowers into surreal creations at the height of the Pop era. Shine bright like a Dalí jewel ✨ Created by the artist in the late 1940s and early 1950s, these astonishing pieces were inspired by the themes and myths that obsessed him, transcribed into gold and precious stones. Dalí’s interest in designing jewelry dates back to January 1939, when he published an article in Vogue, “First Prophecy on Jewels.“ By 1941, Dalí began creating jewels with the Italian jeweler Fulco di Verdura, followed by a multi-decade relationship designing jewels with Carlos Alemany at the firm Alemany & Ertman out of the St. Regis Hotel in New York. See these and more jewels purchased by Museum Benefactors Eleanor and Reynolds Morse now on display at The Dalí Museum. #TheDali #SalvadorDali #Jewels 1: "Persistence of Memory" (1949).
