A global movement to end open-net salmon farming in the ocean.

About us

We are a global alliance of NGOs, activists, scientists, and individuals working together to free the ocean from open-net salmon farms. Salmon farming has devastating impacts on the environment, causing marine life and coastal communities to suffer. Therefore, people around the world are taking a stand against this industry. We support their efforts by fostering local activism, independent research, and policy change. We want to halt the expansion of the salmon industry and protect the ocean, its biodiversity, and the livelihoods that depend on it.

  • 🙄 They say 'all publicity is good publicity,' but that might not hold true for the salmon farming industry: Thousands of 7kg salmon escape from Lerøy farm Norwegian seafood company sold salmon that should have been destroyed Norway´s salmon fishing ban hits local economies hard Norway’s farmed salmon and trout deaths hit new record And the list goes on. 📰 These headlines are just a snapshot of news released in the past few months related to salmon farming in Norway, the place where it all started more than 50 years back. Norway may be the world's largest salmon producer, but its reputation is 'sinking like a rock'  as “the pompous slogans on sustainability and the salvation of a starving world” are being overshadowed by rising fish mortality, depleted #wildsalmon stocks, economic impacts on local communities, disease outbreaks, mass escapes, ecosystem damage, and regulatory violations. 📉 With an increasingly critical audience the industry is losing at home with “a mere 29 out of 100 possible points in a reputation survey. A steep drop from previous surveys.” according to Arne O. Holm from High North News . But this perception is not exclusive to Norway. From Iceland, to Australia and all the way to Canada, surveys reveal that a vast majority of residents don't want these farms in their homelands. This comes as no surprise: For the last 40 years, the industry has prioritised shortcuts toward increased share value and profits driven by robust marketing and deceiving taglines, rather than addressing environmental concerns in the local communities where it operates. 🙈 🙉 🙊 So will the production of meaningless #slogans ever be replaced by real #animalwelfare and #sustainability? What do you think? 😐 🤔 Read the full article here: 👉 https://lnkd.in/dW_FpbUN 👇Drop your thoughts in the comments👇

  • 🌎15 organisations from 9 different countries joined us yesterday for our Political Advocacy Workshop. 🔥The lobbying power of the salmon industry is immense, often driving regulations that prioritise profit over the health of our marine environments and local communities. The industry frequently disguises its motives with inflated employment figures and self-awarded sustainability labels, presenting itself as a developmental opportunity while advocating for lax regulations to avoid accountability. 📌This is why political advocacy is essential in levelling the battlefield. By working closely with policymakers, organisations can help advance environmental regulations that protect the environment, local economies, and the communities they serve. Understanding how to engage with policymakers and address their concerns is crucial for steering the conversation toward a more sustainable future. To support this effort, we organised our first Political Advocacy Workshop in collaboration with Mariano Bertinat, former Secretary of Environment for Santa Cruz Province and current Political Manager and Project Coordinator at Por el Mar, along side its Founder and Director, Martina Sasso. 🌊 Thank you to Rauch Foundation, Patagonia, SeaLegacy, Endangered Species Protection Agency (ESPA), Don't Cage Our Oceans, Feedback , Atlantic Salmon Federation, SalmonCamera, Activists Anglers, Protect Maine Fishing Heritage, Fundación Aysén, Clayoquot Action, Twin Bays and Centinela Patagonia for joining us and to everyone working tirelessly to protect our oceans by keeping these #fishfarmsout.

  • 🚀 Tasmanians want salmon farms out of vulnerable state waters 📌 In 2023, we awarded a grant to NOFF (Neighbours of Fish Farming) to support their work in protecting Tasmania from salmon farming. The team at NOFF, including Peter George, Jess Coughlan, and Matthew Redgrove, has been instrumental in raising awareness about the harmful impacts of the Atlantic salmon industry in Tasmania through: ✅ Social media campaigns. ✅The Australian launch of Off the Table. ✅An impactful national billboard campaign. 📈 As awareness grows across Australia, recent polls show that 72% of Tasmanians want the industry out of shallow, vulnerable state waters. This sentiment reflects a strong public consensus, with Eloise Carr, Director of The Australia Institute, stating that "when it comes to protecting Tasmania’s coast, we have public opinion and scientific evidence on one side, and the vested interests of the salmon industry on the other.” 💀These interests are fueled by the vast lobbying power and resources of the industry, and while the Government has so far resisted supporting the Parliamentary Inquiry’s recommendation to remove salmon farms from sensitive and biodiverse areas, the fight to preserve Tasmania’s waters continues—and we won't quit until we get those #fishfarmsout. Keep raising your voice Neighbours of Fish Farming, people are listening! • The Washington Post advises its readers to ⛔avoid farmed salmon⛔, especially from Chile, Norway, and Scotland. 👉 A report by Seafood Watch indicates that 64% of farmed salmon produced in Chile poses a high environmental risk. In Chile, over 400 salmon farming licenses are located within marine protected areas, originally intended to safeguard rich and vulnerable ecosystems. The situation in Scotland mirrors these concerns. 📌 Fundación Terram has investigated and documented numerous environmental violations by the industry, revealing over 100 instances of overproduction within protected areas remain unsanctioned. ❌ Environmental breaches are indeed widespread in the industry worldwide. Even when operating within legal boundaries, the impacts on marine environments and local economies are devastating. 💰 Despite this, rather than addressing their actions and complying with regulatory frameworks, the industry continues to invest in lobbying, marketing and media influence to discredit organisations that hold them accountable. We are here to support those organisations that represent the interests of local communities all over the world, and to spread the word about how the salmon industry operates above and beneath the sea. 📰 Read the Washington Post article here: https://lnkd.in/d9YaTTe9 ✅ Or learn more details about it here: https://lnkd.in/dknY5mfC #salmon #fishfarmsout

  • Massive conflict of interests revealed 👁 in sustainability initiatives linked to fishmeal in West Africa.🌍 📌 In 2023, Mauritanian factories processed a volume of wild fish that could have met the nutritional needs of 6 to 9.6 million people in West Africa. ❗Instead, it was fed to farmed fish that is mostly consumed in the Global North. These wild species, "often known as the fish of the poor", are a fundamental source of nutrients in local diets, and provide employment to tens of thousands of women, but the pressure from the fishmeal industry is putting them at risk of collapse. In a recent investigation🔦 DeSmog reveals how sustainability initiatives which are meant to improve fishmeal sourcing for salmon farming (and other carnivorous fish farming) are in fact dominated by industry interests with a total lack of representation from civil society or impacted communities. “How seriously can you take a certification programme if it’s just the companies developing their own sets of criteria, and then they are the ones who hold the reins on any kind of accountability?” said researcher Devlin Kuyek in conversation with DeSmog. 📰 Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gk5iqSjP 🔎 Or access the investigation here: https://lnkd.in/gk5iqSjP

  • Policy Impact | 🌊 Steering towards Sustainable Ocean Economies Last Saturday, over 20 policymakers from the United States assembled at the Coastal Convening organised by Don't Cage Our Oceans and State Innovation Exchange in Seattle. During the event, NGO representatives, indigenous leaders, and scientists alongside decision-makers from across the country exchanged invaluable insights regarding aquaculture practices and their impacts while approaching strategies, and experiences to promote sustainable economies through legislation. 🌎 Catalina Cendoya, Director of The GSFR,  was there to share success cases from across the globe, where local NGOs worked hand in hand with policymakers collaborating to regulate the salmon industry while representing their communities' wishes. Starting these conversations is crucial to bridge the information gap on these topics. By working together, policymakers, local leaders, scientists and NGOs can make a difference, ensuring informed decisions, and steering towards a win-win-win future where the environment, communities and local economies can all thrive. 🌱 Thank you Gideon Mordecai, Andrianna Natsoulas, James Mitchell, Ephraim Froehlich and all the speakers, for this invaluable exchange. Thank you to the Suquamish and Duwamish leaders who received us in their lands and showed us your relationship with nature. Thank you Don't Cage Our Oceans and State Innovation Exchange for bringing people together to build a sustainable future for the sea. #sustainabledevelopment #oceanconservation #environmentalpolicy

  • 🌊 GSFR Grants Programme: 🚀 Milestones in Maine “Industrial scale aquaculture has had free reign, is loaded with lobbyists and money – but it will never outstrip the will of the people.” Crystal Canney Executive Director of PMFHF. 📢 Last year, we awarded a grant to Protect Maine's Fishing Heritage Foundation (PMFHF) to support their work alongside local communities in the regulation of large-scale aquaculture. At the time of their grant application, two towns, Cutler and Waldoboro, had already passed aquaculture ordinances. Since receiving the grant, PMFHF has been able to enhance its resources at the service of communities, and in June 2024, two more ordinances were successfully passed. ⛔ Both Penobscot and Winter Harbor effectively banned large-scale aquaculture farms in their coastal waters with unanimous votes.⛔ Notably, the Winter Harbor ordinance was modeled entirely on PMFHF's approach. Today, PMFHF continues to engage with other communities to ensure their voices are heard and their marine environment is protected. 🌎 Every year, we proudly support local efforts worldwide through our Grants Programme, which is currently open for applications until July 24th. Grants are available for any communication campaign, activism, awareness, research and advocacy concrete projects to remove open-net salmon farms from the ocean safeguarding marine environments. • ✨ Not only is this a great piece of journalism, but it's also an interactive article that takes you on a journey, revealing how the salmon industry is threatening food security and the livelihoods of already vulnerable communities in West Africa. It is a must-read to understand the extent of the impacts of salmon farming worldwide. Financial Times Feedback #westafrica #foodsecurity #salmonfarming #norway

Thank you Natasha Hurley, Feedback and Financial Times for bringing us this article illustrating the problem of taking one protein, reducing it to make another whilst harming the welfare of one region, for the economic benefit of another. Consumers are the controlling part of this equation. The argument of "farmed salmon feeding the world" looks like a lie. #greenwashing #sustainability #salmon
