When you walk into a #LEED certified building, you see a badge proudly displayed that announces the status. This badge is hard earned and indicates that #sustainability is a top priority for the building owners. That’s especially true of The Center, The Heritage Group’s hub for connection, collaboration and innovation. In partnership with Envita Solutions, The Center has made recent efforts to measure, track and reduce our carbon footprint. The results: The Center has reached Zero Waste to Landfill certification and earned Silver status in our LEED recertification! Read more about our sustainability efforts:

Today we commemorate Women's Equality Day, a day that marks a pivotal moment in the fight for gender equality in the United States. This day celebrates the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, which granted women the right to vote. It stands as a testament to the tireless efforts of countless women and allies who fought for the fundamental right to participate fully in the democratic process. This day calls for reflection on the strides made and the work that remains. It encourages us to honor the trailblazers who have come before us and to recognize the importance of advocating for policies that promote equality for all women. As we celebrate Women’s Equality Day, let’s recommit ourselves to the cause of gender equality. Let’s support initiatives that empower women and girls, challenge discriminatory practices and continue to push for a society where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential.

Some helpful driving tips to keep you, pedestrians, road workers and other drivers safe: Utilize Phone Mounts & Bluetooth! In July of 2020, Indiana passed the Hands-Free Law, prohibiting drivers from holding or using a mobile device while driving. If you must use maps or take a call, utilize phone mounts and Bluetooth connectivity to keep your hands free. Buckle Up! Buckling up every time you get in a vehicle is a simple, yet effective, way to protect yourself in a crash. Wearing a seatbelt in the front seat of a passenger car reduces risk of fatal injury by 45 percent and moderate or critical injury by 50 percent according to NHTSA. Buckling up is your best defense against a distracted driver. The Text Can Wait! If you must send or receive a text, pull over to a safe location and park your car first. If you have passengers, appoint a “designated texter” to handle all your texting. Do Not Disturb! Turn on "do not disturb" while driving, or a similar app to block incoming calls and messages while the vehicle is in motion. By joining the Buckle Up Phone Down movement, you can play a crucial role in improving roadway safety in the Crossroads of America. The Indiana Safe Zones pilot program aims to protect the lives of motorists and road workers in highway worksites by monitoring vehicle speeds. We're grateful to the Indiana Department of Transportation, Milestone Contractors LP and others throughout our #HeritageFamily for the years of work and collaboration with lawmakers to launch this critical program. “The goal of the Safe Zones program is to slow drivers down, reduce crashes, and most importantly, save lives,” said INDOT Commissioner Mike Smith. “Speed continues to be a factor in work zone crashes and changing driver behavior is crucial to making work zones safer for drivers and road workers. For everyone’s safety, I urge drivers to wear your seat belt, avoid distractions and follow the posted speed limit.” #SafeZoneIN

Today, #SafeZoneIN cameras are live in our I-70 Design Build Project in Hancock County, Indiana. The cameras document motorist who are driving 11 mph or more above the speed limit. A pre-enforcement warning period will take place for 30 days. When the grace period is over, first-time violators will be mailed a warning notice. Second-time offenders will receive a $75 civil penalty. Third-time violators and beyond will receive a $150 penalty each time. In 2023, 33 people were killed and more than 1,750 were injured in work zones. Speed continues to be a factor in many of those crashes that are high impact, involve injuries and fatalities. With the launch of this program, we can hold drivers accountable for slowing down when traveling in a work zone. As summer draws to a close and students return to school, it felt like a great time to share a fun reflection on last month’s Kids Science Camp. The primary mission of the camp is to invest in our future leaders and help them learn to think creatively so that they can tackle big problems.    Now in its tenth year, Kids Science Camp provides children of #HeritageFamily employees with the opportunity to participate in #STEM activities. Thanks to dozens of dedicated Heritage employees that serve as subject matter experts, our volunteers created wonderful and informative learning experiences, guiding kids through scientific experiments and discovery.    We are proud to invest in Kids Science Camp, which fuels curiosity and provides valuable knowledge, life skills and potential career choices to our future scientists while deepening our partnership with The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

The Heritage Group is joining the Indiana Department of Transportation in encouraging all Hoosiers to buckle up and put the phone down each and every time they get in a vehicle. INDOT's Buckle Up Phone Down campaign is part of a nationwide initiative that tackles two of the most critical actions both drivers and passengers can take to improve safety on Indiana roadways. First, every person should buckle up every time they get into a vehicle. While only six percent of vehicle occupants are unbelted, they account for 47 percent of all fatalities. Second, drivers should put their phones down when they’re behind the wheel. According to AAA, texting while driving increases risk of a crash by 50 percent, and more than 7,000 crashes were related to distracted driving or mobile devices in Indiana in 2022. Buckle Up Phone Down aims to change driver behavior. More information and additional resources available on INDOT’s Buckle Up Phone Down website: BUPDIN.com. #BUPD

Last week, we hosted our annual Field Day at The Center, which followed an Olympic theme and definitely included some athletic endeavors. More than 160 members of our #HeritageFamily representing six companies competed in four fun games: tug-of-war on the sand volleyball court, torch ring toss, basketball shootout on our new basketball hoop and “chicken & noodles” relay race in which pairs of participants using only pool noodles carried a rubber chicken through a course.    These events ignited everyone's competitive spirits, but also provided an opportunity to meet people from other departments and companies, build relationships and make people feel like part of the family.
