Working at the intersection of policy & politics. Empowering policymakers. Driving nonpartisan educational improvement.

About us

The Hunt Institute is a strategic catalyst for transforming public education and securing our country’s future. Using our depth and breadth of knowledge, we bring together the right people and resources to facilitate critical dialogue and mobilize action on the issues that matter in education. Established in 2001, The Institute honors the legacy of James B. Hunt, Jr., the former governor of North Carolina who distinguished himself as an ardent champion of education. That work continues in earnest today. Our mandate: to inspire elected officials and key policymakers to make informed decisions that result in improving the lives of all children through quality education. In 2016, the Institute became an independent, nonprofit entity and joined forces with Duke University’s Sanford School of Public Policy to pursue research, educational partnerships and events related to improving education policy.

School systems are focusing on carefully evaluating accessible educational technology tools due to the growing cybersecurity risks. Doug Levin, the director of the K12 Security Information Exchange, stresses the importance of thoroughly assessing digital tools before introducing them at the district or school level. While safety is a priority, he warns against overly restrictive measures that could impede innovation and learning. Finding the right balance is essential for creating a secure and productive educational environment! Source: bit.ly/3YX7VU4

Like in previous years, governors emerged with a strong consensus on the need for increased funding in K-12 education. This year, at least 32 governors underscored the importance of such investments, with several highlighting historic increases in K-12 budgets. Notably, Georgia has made a bold proposal, aiming to continue its trend of high investment by allocating an additional $1.4 billion for K-12 education in the 2024 and 2025 budget proposals. This commitment is essential for ensuring that our schools have the resources to provide quality education and support to students across the state. Let's continue to advocate for education funding that empowers our future leaders! Source: bit.ly/3yOgCoV

Multilingual learners often encounter hurdles when learning literature in English. Much of the literary landscape is tied to cultural nuances, requiring a depth of understanding beyond mere language proficiency. According to The Hunt Institute’s Across the Aisle report 62 percent of voters strongly favor implementing evidence-based literacy programs in classrooms to improve student reading levels. Join us on 9/19 for a conversation into the role of engaging and nurturing multilingual learners in their reading development, and the significance of fostering a culturally inclusive approach to literature education. Honors Political Science Student @ North Carolina State University

A few weeks ago I completed my internship at The Hunt Institute. This opportunity allowed for me to really experience working in higher education policy and allowed me to have a hand in changing the higher education landscape for the better! Throughout the course of my summer I was able to connect with some of the greatest minds in the higher education continuum, research on effective policies to achieve equity within higher education, and even draw attention to issues that I found important! Some highlights included planning and hosting my own webinar on the importance of cultural and affinity spaces on college campuses, providing research for the Hunt-Kean Fellows conference with legislators from across the nation, and working closely on developing policy considerations to support HBCUs nationwide. I am forever grateful for the experience that The Hunt Institute has given me! I couldn’t have done it without my amazing team to support me! Thank you Jamison Lowery, Waverly Whisenant, Ph.D., and Megan Zogby, M.Ed.! This summer was the greatest, I cannot wait to see what the future holds!
