🔥 Chicago is bracing for dangerous heat today, with heat indices expected to reach 110°F. Extreme heat is the deadliest weather-related hazard in the U.S., and its impacts are felt most acutely by marginalized communities of color. In 2023, 2,325 lives were lost to heat-related illnesses—a sobering record. We must not forget the 1995 Chicago heat wave, where 739 people, primarily elderly Black residents, died. At I-DIEM, we are committed to safeguarding the most vulnerable and under-resourced communities from the dangers of extreme heat and other disasters. The frequency and intensity of extreme flooding events are increasing due to climate change. For example, Connecticut now experiences "1-in-100-year" storms every 20 years, highlighting a significant shift in weather patterns. This week also marks the third anniversary of the tragic floods in Tennessee, which claimed 20 lives. At I-DIEM, we recognize that while these disasters affect entire communities, marginalized and resource-challenged survivors often face the most significant barriers in recovery. We are committed to driving equity in disaster response and recovery efforts. Learn more about our work at www.I-DIEM.org. #DisasterEquity #ClimateChange #Resilience #Equity

🌍Jennifer Kwansema Quartey and J. Ekow Rhule with our I-DIEM Africa team are proud to have participated in the CADRI Dissemination Workshop this week in Accra. The event brought together key stakeholders from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), CADRI Partnership, and the UN Inter-Agency Working Group on Emergencies to discuss the findings of the CADRI assessment, which was conducted to support Ghana's national disaster risk reduction strategy. The workshop highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional capacities, enhancing coordination across sectors, and investing in early warning systems. There was a strong emphasis on community engagement and the development of district-level contingency plans to build resilience at the grassroots level. As we move forward, I-DIEM remains committed to supporting these initiatives and contributing to a more resilient and sustainable future for Ghana. 🌱 #ClimateResilience #DisasterRiskReduction #Ghana #IDEM #CADRI #Africa
