🚗🔋 ICCT’s new research brief estimates the life-cycle emissions of four common passenger vehicle powertrains in the United States: internal combustion engine (#ICE) vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles (#HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (#PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (#BEVs). 📊 The results are clear: BEV sedans and SUVs have the lowest life-cycle GHG #emissions across all powertrains. Across PHEVs, HEVs, and ICE SUVs/sedans in model year 2024 and those projected for model year 2030, life-cycle GHG emissions are higher than BEVs powered by the average grid mix, and even higher when compared with BEVs powered by 100% renewable electricity. What are European countries doing to boost electric truck sales? 🚚 ⚡#Race2Zero There are several ways for governments to support the development of the zero-emission vehicle market. Policy instruments such as direct purchase subsidies can help mitigate high purchase costs and boost sales in the early adoption phase. 🔎 For our quarterly market monitor series, we examined subsidy programs for zero-emission trucks across European countries. Here's what we found: 🔹 As of May 2024, 11 countries in the EU-27, as well as Norway and the United Kingdom, offer direct purchase subsidy schemes to transport operators. 🔹 Beyond subsidies, other financial incentives such as comprehensive tax benefits are available in countries like Belgium, Denmark, France, and Spain. 🔹 Some countries, like Austria, Germany, The Czech Republic, and Hungary, offer CO2-based road tolls for diesel trucks and an exemption or reduction for zero-emission HDVs. Are electric vehicle drivers finally moving from range-anxiety to range “serenity”? 🧘♂️🚗⚡ #EVs #range ICCT Europe Director Peter Mock tells us what 3 years of driving electric has taught him about EVs energy consumption. His key takeaway? A car with a battery on the smaller end of the market's capacities range is sufficient for most urban and rural car drivers, as recent ICCT research also shows. But are EVs really consuming as much energy as manufacturers claim? A closer look at typical driving patterns can help us understand real-world energy consumption. 👇

What are governments doing to speed up the transition to #CleanTransport?🚗🚚🔌 An increasing number of regulators at national and state level worldwide are taking the lead by setting official targets for zero-emission vehicle (#ZEV) sales across light-duty vehicles, and adopting binding regulations for their uptake. City governments are also helping people breathe cleaner air with low- and zero-emission zones.🏙️💨 Take a look: https://lnkd.in/eKdzg7_b #emissions #climate #EVs #zeroemission #emissions #transport Dr. Sandra Wappelhorst Yihao Xie

🇵🇱 Warsaw’s new low-emission zone went into effect this week, marking a concerted effort by the city to reduce vehicle emissions and improve air quality in the urban downtown. Supported by TRUE Initiative research with its partners, Clean Air Fund and The International Council on Clean Transportation, this new LEZ will target the highest emitting vehicles and could reduce NOx emissions by 28% and particulate matter emissions by up to 55% by 2026. One of the most important policies in India for accelerating #electrification ⚡ 🚗 of road transport are the Corporate average fuel economy standards or #CAFEStandards (also known as #GHG or #CO2 standards in the US and EU.) In our recent #PolicyBrief, Ashok Deo and Harsimran Kaur from The International Council on Clean Transportation highlight how stricter fuel efficiency norms can accelerate #EV adoption in India. #CAFEstandards #FuelEfficiency #PolicyBrief #PublicPolicy #ElectricVehicle #EVs Anandi M 🌱 | Amit Bhatt | Shikha Rokadiya | Aravind Harikumar | Sumati Kohli | Vaibhav Kush | Revathy Pradeep | Bhaumik Gowande | Namita Singh, PhD | Sunitha Anup, PhD | Aviral Yadav | Anirudh Narla | Moorthy Nair | Dr. Hanif Qureshi, IPS | California Air Resources Board | Ministry Of Heavy Industries NITI Aayog

“What I've seen is that it's really difficult to shift shipbuilders away from anything besides internal combustion engines and liquid fuels", says ICCT Marine Program Director Bryan Comer. "So, if it's not liquid fuel or can't be liquefied, and it's not something that's burned in an engine, it's a big uphill battle.” #Maritimeshipping Read more the full Reuters article below 👇
Things are moving more slowly in the U.S., notes Bryan Comer, director of the marine programme at The International Council on Clean Transportation. Two bills in Congress seek to establish a similar system to FuelEU Maritime, and to charge a fee on emissions from ships arriving in the U.S. Depending on the outcome of the U.S. election, Comer speculates that they might have a chance of progressing in a future Congress. Which fuels could deliver decarbonisation? Comer is clear: “What I've seen is that it's really difficult to shift shipbuilders away from anything besides internal combustion engines and liquid fuels. So, if it's not liquid fuel or can't be liquefied, and it's not something that's burned in an engine, it's a big uphill battle.”
Can the shipping industry chart a course that delivers for the planet?
