A year ago, Denny Vrandečić of the Wikimedia Foundation, one of the key people behind Wikidata, made some telling remarks about when not to use LLMs during a keynote at the The Knowledge Graph Conference: “Why would you ever use a 96 layer LLM with 175 billion parameters to generate a multiplication, which is a single operation with a CPU? Just because an LLM can do these kinds of things doesn’t mean they should be. Why should you be generating knowledge again and again when you can just look it up in a confident way?…. It’s just not very efficient.” What's happened in the past year since Vrandečić made this observation? Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) applications use generative AI to analyze private datasets that have been vectorized by AI/ML embedding models. Additionally, Pierre is the inventor of the #IEML language, which proposes a calculable coding of meaning. Beyond academia, he serves as the CEO of Intlekt Metadata, a company specializing in ontology design. Keynote Abstract: What does it mean, exactly, to understand and to know? Here's a glimpse at the Slide Deck we designed last month with Maya Natarajan for her talk at The Knowledge Graph Conference in NYC. 🗽 I love working on such projects because of the astonishing amount of knowledge I gain from talking to the clients about their concepts and the fun brainstorming we do to find the best ways of presenting complex ideas using simple visuals. 💡 My biggest takeaway from this project was learning about RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) which was mentioned in many other talks at KGC as well.
