“I share Vera's experience with B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), a blood cancer, to spread awareness for childhood cancer and the need for more resources, funding, and safer treatments. As a caregiver, you advocate for a child who cannot. Don't be shy to ask for second opinions, ask other cancer caregivers, and ask the oncologist to take the time to explain things. I had zero medical background before my child's diagnosis, but it has been through my questions that I have become more confident in advocating for her. Give yourself grace; you are doing your best with what is in your control." Monica's experience is all too common for parents; it can be overwhelming without a support system, or resources. September 4th is #WorldLeukemiaDay, and Monica and Vera’s story reminds us of the ongoing need for awareness, research, and advocacy on behalf of patients and survivors like Vera. September is Blood Cancer Awareness and Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. Let's raise awareness and funds for the future of #BloodCancer patients, like Vera. Thanks to a matching gift from the Big Nova Foundation and The Moore Family, your donation to LLS through 9/30/24 will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $250,000. Please welcome Lauren McCowin from Delta Air Lines to our 2024 Light The Night Tallahassee Executive Leadership Committee! Lauren McCowin is a graduate of both, Florida State University and University of South Florida with degrees in Criminology and Cyber Security. After working several years in her field as an Investigate (Crime) Analyst, she decided to set her sights on travel and became a Flight Attendant with Delta Air Lines. Lauren resides in Madisonville, Louisiana, with her boyfriend, Jake, and his three children. When she’s not busy being a “bonus mom” and flying the friendly skies, she volunteers her time with the Junior League of Greater Covington. After losing her mom, Diana, to Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) in 2019, Lauren has been committed to raising awareness for blood cancer. She was a candidate for LLS Atlanta Man & Woman of the Year, (now called Visionaries of the Year), raising over fifty-thousand dollars; and has participated in the LLS Light the Night in Tallahassee for the last five years and this year will be her sixth year. Lauren walks in memory and honor of her mom. We are grateful for Lauren's commitment to our mission of finding a cure and hope that you will join them to bring light in the darkness of cancer on Thursday, November 14!
