There is such a thing as being burned out from being underutilized
Worker confidence is in the gutter. According to LinkedIn’s latest Workforce Confidence survey, employees do not feel great about their career prospects. Their confidence that their careers will progress over the next year dropped 5 points since the beginning of 2024, its lowest level since 2020. And that drop is particularly significant among men. Although men have historically reported higher rates of career confidence than women, their confidence level dropped a whopping 8 points since the start of the year. The average career confidence score (regardless of gender) peaked at +36 (on a scale from -100 to +100) in early 2023 but has steadily fallen to +24 this year. 📸: NBC
Millennials and Gen Z are throwing in the towel at work. According to an ADP poll, younger generational cohorts are increasingly clocking in strictly for a paycheck with little expectation for fun or engagement. Only about 25% of millennials consider enjoying their work a priority when considering a new job. That's a stark contrast to the 45% of baby boomers. And 44% of Gen Zers prioritize salary to the detriment of all other factors. The fear of job insecurity is also highest among Gen Z, with 50% fearing layoffs in comparison to only 24% of boomers. 📸: NBC
With boomers increasingly headed for retirement, who will take their place? Small towns across America are struggling to find the answer. In big cities, young workers abound, but outside city limits, small localities are seeing the population trend toward the older side, per federal data. And many public sector employees are set to retire soon with no obvious replacements. As small-town officials struggle to find younger workers, they're being forced to eliminate certain services. A town in Maine disbanded its police department after the police chief retired earlier this year, according to the WSJ. And about two-thirds of Texas cities with 3,000 to 5,000 residents don't have a finance director, per the Texas Municipal League. That figure shoots even higher among Texas cities with fewer than 3,000 people. "We’re going to have to get aggressive about attracting the next generation of workers to our towns," said Cara Woodson Welch, chief executive of the Public Sector HR Association, told the WSJ. 📸: Netflix
