It is important to consider everyone’s safety when creating road safety measures, including bicyclists and pedestrians. In an article for Issues in Science and Technology, Rebecca Sanders argues that the U.S. needs to be more proactive in identifying high-risk road types and developing safety standards that protect everyone — not just drivers. Increasingly devastating disasters are an existential threat to the Gulf of Mexico region, but a new Issues in Science and Technology article suggests that building capacity for local emergency management agencies and disaster research could help the region cope — and thrive. "In the same way that California bulrushes can withstand a storm surge when planted together, so too can well-resourced local emergency management agencies help the region weather the effects of a changing climate." In order for humans to travel and prosper in space, it is critical to understand how the space environment impacts human beings as well as the plants and microbes that will be part of future habitat systems. Our new decadal survey presents key themes and questions to guide future research on biological and physical sciences in space, including exploring how space alters interactions between organisms and how genetic diversity and life history influence physiological adaptation to the space environment. Women in the United States experience a higher prevalence than men of many chronic conditions, including Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and osteoporosis; however, research has yet to fully explain these differences. Our new report identifies gaps and provides research recommendations for improving our understanding of chronic conditions that are specific to women, predominantly impact women, or affect women differently. “The phenomena of climate change and biodiversity loss are inextricably linked and mutually reinforcing. There is no solving the climate challenge without solving the biodiversity crisis, and biodiversity itself should be viewed as a primary solution to climate change.” In an article for Issues in Science and Technology, Maureen Kearney discusses the relationship between biodiversity and climate change and the importance of policy, research, and investment that addresses both. The U.S. Gulf Coast region is particularly vulnerable to weather and climate hazards, which can cause successive and compounding disasters that wreak havoc on Gulf communities. Our new report examines the various disasters that struck the Gulf Coast region in 2020 in 2021 and recommends actions to improve preparedness, response, and recovery strategies. "For too long, America responded to disasters as singular, isolated events," said report committee chair Roy Wright. "Individual disasters do not occur in isolation amid a community’s history. With each successive punch of overlapping disaster recoveries, the vulnerabilities increase."
