📸 July 19-21, photographer Tom Styrkowicz will be in Bloch Lobby taking free, commemorative portraits of guests as part of the One by One Community Portrait project. Portraits will be displayed in the lobby in celebration of the museum’s 90th anniversary. Guests can also take home a free 8x10 print of their portrait. Today is #HIVTestingDay — a time to encourage folks to connect with care services in their communities and get tested for HIV. In Kansas City, KC CARE Health Center provides free HIV testing and education as well as prevention, treatment, and primary care. Learn more about their HIV services: bit.ly/45OWC1t The artist Niki de Saint Phalle used her art to fight the stigmas around HIV/AIDS during the epidemic of the 80s and 90s. Among those works is AIDS: You Can’t Catch it Holding Hands, a book she wrote and illustrated in collaboration with immunologist Silvio Barandun. Rendered in Saint Phalle’s typically colorful and imaginative style, the book provides plainspoken guidance about the virus, its transmission, and safe sexual practices. The book is currently on view in the exhibition Niki de Saint Phalle: Rebellion and Joy, a wide-ranging survey of the artist’s career. On May 30, Kansas City’s creative community will remix the museum experience for the first-ever Night/Shift — a free evening of creative encounters headlined by local DJs, visual artists, and live performers. From art to zines and everything in between, Night/Shift offers unexpected ways to engage and explore among 5,000 years of artistic innovation in the museum’s collection.
