Democracy Needs Us
About us
NAL is leading a movement fighting for inclusive democracy by equipping immigrants, refugees, and their allies with the tools they need to realize their potential by running for and holding elected office; as well as engaging in civic action that brings their voices to the forefront of American politics. We uplift New Americans — anyone who identifies closely with the immigrant experience — by tackling equity in representation. We believe that our democracy is stronger when everyone can participate. Unfortunately, our elected government, from city council to Congress, does not reflect our country’s diverse population. By galvanizing and investing in New Americans, we work to achieve an inclusive democracy that benefits from the insight, potential, and power of our newest citizens and their allies. NAL is the only national, nonpartisan organization focused on bringing New Americans into the political process. We accomplish our goals by: • Training and inspiring immigrants, refugees, and their allies to engage in our democracy. • Building partnerships and coalitions among New American elected officials so they can advance more inclusive policies from state to state. • Researching solutions to create a more inclusive democracy where every American is represented. • Honoring the contributions of outstanding New American elected officials. In recognition of other underrepresented communities, we also collaborate with like-minded organizations that raise political voices in the Native American and African American communities. Ultimately, our fight is focused on changing our leadership to fight for all Americans. We believe that when the diversity of our elected officials reflects the diversity our nation, we will achieve the ideal form of government: an inclusive democracy of the people, by the people, and for the people.
