We’re excited to introduce "I Am," a new digital exhibition in our Community Gallery created through NMOA’s P.L.A.C.E. initiative in partnership with YMCA Newark. This project served Newark’s community, especially focusing on temporarily unhoused youth. Over two days, the Museum welcomed a mixed group of housed and unhoused youth from the Y's program, providing a safe space to explore and express their identities through art. Visit the Welcome Center to see their powerful works on view through September 15.

Carlos Enríquez was a Cuban-born artist known for his unique style, romancero guajiro (“cowboy romance”). As a key figure in the Cuban Avant-garde movement, Enríquez often blended genres and rejected traditional art forms. His work frequently featured tropical landscapes and wild horses, symbols of aggression and sexuality, as seen in "Landscape with Wild Horses" (La Guajuba), 1942. Recently restored by our skilled conservator, this painting captures the essence of 19th-century Cuba in a fluid, dreamlike style. Check it out in our Seeing America 20th and 21st Century galleries. ✨ _ Carlos Enríquez, Landscape with Wild Horses (La Guajuba), 1942. Oil on composition board, 16 x 15 1/8 in. 🌍 This Yorùbá sculpture is a fascinating blend of tradition and modernity. The figure, adorned with traditional scarification marks and balancing a load on his head, wears Western clothing and stands beside a bicycle—a symbol of progress and upward mobility in mid-20th century Nigeria. This piece beautifully captures the cultural exchanges between Africa and the West, reflecting the everyday life and evolving identities in Nigeria at the time. _ Unrecorded Yorùbá artist, Man with Bicycle, Nigeria, mid-20th century. Polychrome wood, Overall (figure): H 36 x W 12 x D 10 in. (H 91.4 x W 30.5 x D 25.4 cm). Overall (bicycle): H 17 x W 28 x D 6 in. (H 43.2 x W 71.1 x D 15.2 cm). Purchase 1977 Wallace M. 🖼️ Did you know that The Newark Museum was one of the first in the U.S. to acquire Lalique glass? Back in 1913, we acquired four exquisite pieces from Haviland & Co. in NYC. Fast forward to 1929, we teamed up with the iconic L. Bamberger & Company, the famed Newark department store, for exhibitions of modern European design, enhancing our collection with stunning pieces like this Lalique vase. Known for its avant-garde style, René Lalique's designs blended modernism with representational motifs. This vase with its stylized geometry of berry branches (baies in French) and its cool, black and grey coloration, contrasting shiny and matte surfaces, is a signature Lalique design. _ René Lalique, Les Baies, 1929 . 🎈Happy Birthday to Yinka Shonibare, CBE! The internationally acclaimed multimedia British-Nigerian artist explores themes of race and colonialism. This photograph, based on a satirical 1799 etching by Spanish artist Francisco de Goya, features a sleeping man dressed in 18th-century attire made of Shonibare’s signature factory-printed textiles that were ubiquitous throughout his childhood home of Lagos, Nigeria. These textiles are known as “African” but were originally made by European factories for export. In Shonibare’s work, they serve as a perfect metaphor for the tangled interrelationship between Africa and Europe. See this work on view in our Arts of Global Africa galleries. _ Yinka Shonibare, CBE, The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters (Australia), 2008. C-Print mounted on aluminum, 72 x 49 13/16 in.
