Asian residents have the highest median household income than any other race category in Indianapolis. However, when compared to the Asian population in 49 other cities, Indianapolis ranks near the bottom. This means that while the Asian population has a higher median household income than any other race category, the Asian household income is lower in Indianapolis than most other comparable cities. Indiana’s ILEARN assessment reveals a troubling lack of equity in reading proficiency among students in grades 3-8. While Asian students have the highest English proficiency rates in Indianapolis, Black and Hispanic students lag significantly behind. If these groups tested at the same rate as their Asian peers, an additional 7,655 Black and 4,819 Hispanic students would be proficient in English/Language Arts. Despite a decline in proficiency across all racial groups since 2019, Indianapolis ranks relatively well in equity compared to other cities, with a smaller racial gap than most. Marion County’s Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative has significantly reduced juvenile charges since its inception in 2006. However, deep racial disparities persist. For every white youth charged, two Hispanic and over five Black youths are charged with crimes. If Black youth were charged at the same rate as their white peers, we’d see nearly 664 fewer charges each year. Alarming trends show that while the rate for white youth remains stable, charges against Black youth are increasing, widening the gap.
