The Ridley Scholarship Program will be awarding the 2024 Derek E. Brown Awards to pre-medical and pre-dental UVA alumni. This scholarship will grant up to six recent UVA African American/Black alumni (Classes of 2019-2024) with $3,000 awards each. Recipients may use the awards to defray the high costs associated with applying to medical or dental schools. Eligibility To be eligible to receive this award, applicants must: - Be recent undergraduate alumni of the University of Virginia (Classes of 2019-2024) - Be actively applying to medical or dental school programs Application Materials Students must submit the following items in their application: - Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate transcripts - MCAT or DAT score - Resume - Letter of recommendation from mentor or professor - List of all medical or dental schools you are applying to - Personal statement The deadline for applications is 11:59 p.m. ET on August 31, 2024. Congratulations, Ava Godfrey! We are so proud of you!
As my second year at UVA comes to a close, I’m happy to announce my plans for the summer. After my completion of the Truist Leadership Academy with The Ridley Scholarship Program and my fellowship with UVA’s Meriwether Lewis Institute, I will be studying the carceral systems of Great Britain and the United States at the University of Oxford. I'm looking forward to fostering connections at home and abroad with students, professors, and faculty this summer!

We’ve accomplished something incredible! More than 130 donors helped us celebrate Dr. Walter Ridley’s 114th birthday by giving over $42,000 to support the Ridley Scholarship Program on April 1. Thank you to our dedicated community who came together to ensure that this environment of learning, leadership, and legacy for Black students at UVA lasts and grows for decades.
