National Doughnut Day is Friday. Did you know National Doughnut Day was started by The Salvation Army? To celebrate the occasion, a number of local doughnut shops will offer a free doughnuts and other incentives this Friday to customers throughout the day. The Salvation Army started National Doughnut Day in Chicago in 1938 to help raise needed funds during the Great Depression and commemorate the work of the “doughnut lassies” who fed donuts to American soldiers on the front lines during World War I. The doughnuts became synonymous with The Salvation Army, as well as the American soldiers who were returning home with the nickname, “doughboys.” Today, The Salvation Army continues to provide meals and numerous other services to clients who visit Salvation Army programs daily.
