About us

The World Food Prize is the foremost international award recognizing -- without regard to race, religion, nationality, or political beliefs -- the achievements of individuals who have advanced human development by improving the quality, quantity or availability of food in the world. The Prize was founded in 1986 by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, recipient of the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize. Since then, the World Food Prize has honored outstanding individuals who have made vital contributions throughout the world. Laureates have been recognized from Bangladesh, Belgium, Brazil, China, Denmark, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Israel, Mexico, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United Nations and the United States. The World Food Prize also annually hosts the Borlaug Dialogue international symposium, and several youth education programs including the Global Youth Institute and Borlaug-Ruan International Internship to inspire the next generation to explore careers in agriculture and food security.

  • 👋 Please join us in welcoming Summer 2024 #BorlaugRuanIntern, Kayla Sohn, a junior at Yale University. This summer, Kayla interned at the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in Chennai, India. She contributed to MSSRF’s efforts to accelerate the use of modern science for sustainable and rural and tribal agricultural development. “I am struck by the complexities of the water crisis and research surrounding the issue of water insecurity. Specifically, I want to understand how the role of gender in water insecurity impacts women and children's health and well-being,” said Sohn. “ I have the privilege of doing research at the M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation through the Borlaug-Ruan International Internship and am eager to learn as much as I can while gaining new perspectives to the research being done in this field.” 📍Kayla is originally from Manhasset Hills, New York. • In an effort to identify and celebrate global trailblazers working in food and agriculture, the World Food Prize Foundation has launched its first-ever Top Agri-food Pioneers (TAP) List. This year’s TAP awardees come from 20 countries on six continents, represent a range of ages and work in varied fields, from farming to animal and crop science, agtech, nutrition, education, advocacy and more. This year’s awardees represent the first cohort of TAP, a community intended to be expanded each year to facilitate greater co-learning and collaboration. The announcement comes in honor of the Foundation’s 38th anniversary this year and recognizes 38 pioneers, who will be featured at the 2024 Borlaug Dialogue in Des Moines, Iowa, October 29-31. "I am deeply humbled and honored to be named a Top Agri-food Pioneer by the World Food Prize Foundation, an organization whose commitment to global food security inspires us all,” said Han Chen, co-founder and CEO of ZeaKal, a biotech start-up revolutionizing crop production by enhancing photosynthesis to boost the oil and protein content of major food and energy crops. “Agriculture has always been a purpose-driven industry. • 👏Meet Andrew Diaz, 2024 #WallaceCarver fellow! This summer, Andrew worked at USDA’s Honey Bee Breeding Genetics & Physiology Lab in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. “After combing through a swarm of information concerning my fellowship placement, I brooded upon how I could help solve agriculture-related difficulties,” said Diaz. “That’s when I came across the buzz of my choice which was far from a drone. To learn more about urban periphery agriculture and one of the super pollinators that accompany it, bees!” 📍Andrew is a freshman at Princeton University originally from Jacksonville, Florida. Congratulations Andrew!
