Etiquette and the Flag Code. How to Respect The Flag This Memorial Day. The United States Flag Code is a set of guidelines for the display and handling of the American flag. It was first established by Congress in 1923 and then later codified into law in 1942. Here are some key points from the U.S. Flag Code: Displaying the Flag: The flag should be displayed from sunrise to sunset on buildings and stationary flagstaffs in the open. It can be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during hours of darkness. Half-Staff: The flag should be flown at half-staff on certain days, as proclaimed by the President, or upon the death of certain officials or public figures. Respect for the Flag: The flag should never touch the ground or anything beneath it, should not be used as apparel, bedding, or drapery, and should not be used for advertising purposes.
