Most recently, we supported OLA’s Youth Connect program providing bilingual mental health support for young people on the East End of Long Island.   We’re taking this opportunity to focus on the connections between systemic racism and mental health in the United States, from the impacts of structural racism on mental health to inequities in access to treatment. Our program officers recently attended a gathering hosted by the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers to learn about the history and importance of kelp farming. Overdevelopment in the Hamptons over 40 years led to dangerously elevated nitrogen levels in the bay, causing ecological harm, including killing the seafood and fish that sustained their community for generations. We made an environmental grant to the Sisters of St. Joseph in 2022 to plan the construction of a kelp hatchery for Shinnecock Bay.
