For the People Who Serve. Strengthening the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families.
About us
The USO is for the people who serve. Strengthening the well-being of the people serving in America’s military and their families. Since 1941, the USO has strengthened America's military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities, the USO is always by their side. We are the Force Behind the Forces. We currently operate more than 250 USO centers at or near military installations, including in combat zones, MEPS centers, several airports, and even un-staffed USO service sites in places too dangerous for anyone but combat troops to occupy. We serve the American Armed Forces - specifically, U.S. Active, Reserve, and Guard service members and their families through a wide arrange of programs and entertainment. The USO is a congressionally chartered, private organization that relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support its activities, and is powered by a family of over 30,000 volunteers to accomplish our mission. The USO is not part of the federal government.

Meet Penny, the 2023 USO Canine Volunteer of the Year! 🐾 This lovable labrador brings comfort and boosts morale for service members and their families. As Penny pitter-patters her way down the halls of the USO Warrior Center in Landstuhl, Germany, the mood visibly shifts. After all, it’s hard not to immediately feel a boost when you see the 9-year-old yellow labrador approach, tail wagging wide with an open smile. But Penny’s work as a therapy dog and USO Canine Volunteer does so much more than just boost moods – she provides real, emotional support and helps alleviate stress for the service members who have come to this USO Center to rest and recuperate. The USO's mission to uplift and support our service members took a unique turn recently with a special visit to Alaska's remote military installations. Winter Olympians, including Paralympian Dan Cnossen and snowboarders Hailey Langland and Red Gerard, traveled to Eielson Air Force Base, Fort Wainwright, and Fort Greely, where they shared their experiences, connected with service members, and inspired everyone they met. These athletes brought a message of resilience and teamwork—reminding our troops that no matter how isolated they may feel, they are never alone. The Olympians’ visit was a powerful reminder of the shared challenges and triumphs between athletes and service members. We are incredibly proud of the USO’s ongoing commitment to go wherever our service members are stationed, ensuring they feel supported and appreciated! #TheUSO https://lnkd.in/egnRvht9
