Very excited to share our first episode of Third Way Health's Healthcare Ops Wave podcast with Julie Gessin, COO of Schweiger Dermatology Group. Why the name? Operations and waves actually have a lot in common - both are cyclical with the odd storm inbetween 😉 More importantly though, we want to use this platform to highlight some of people behind healthcare operations, starting with Julie, who started as a physician assistant and employee #7 and now oversees a group of 2,000 employees with over 380 providers (a journey any startup can be envious of!) It was a great conversation about Julie's perspective on inflection points across Schweiger's growth path, her perspectives on outsourcing, and the sibling relationship she builds with close vendors. Excited, tired, proud, nervous, hopeful - coming out of our Third Way Health leadership offsite is always a lot. Spending 2 days in a room with Timm Schneider, Royce Cheng, Lauren Leslie, Sebastian Ramirez, MPH, CPXP, PMP, Juan Felipe Bohorquez, Jack Johnson, and Natalia Iregui Parra means a lot of really interesting discussions with exchanges of lots of strong viewpoints. So what do we take away? - We don't take things personally: You know you have a great team when we can all passionately stand for our viewpoints, but still share laughs and enjoy each other's time over dinner afterwards. - We push each other: Diamonds are created under pressure, and so are really good strategies and ideas. - Some tension is constructive: We are ambitious with our goals, while recognizing the day is 24 hours for everyone. This creates really interesting discussions about resourcing, which themselves serve as a check on our goal setting. - Diversity and inclusion is important: We're 8 people, with many different backgrounds, styles, and viewpoints. We have to continue to work to create structures that get inputs from everyone evenly.

Welcome to all new members of the Black Jacket Club!
Just heading back from a great few days in our #Medellin office, where was conducted a slightly overdue Black Jacket session for a cohort of our team members that have completed their one year anniversary with Third Way Health. Working at Third Way Health is not always easy -- we set the bar very high for ourselves and grow pretty rapidly -- which is why the Black Jacket symbolizes all the symbolic grit and dirt that accumulates after a year of daily hard work. What I am most proud of is that 11 of the 15 individuals with me in the photo started as entry-level patient concierge representatives or product analysts and have since been promoted to Team Leads, Assistant Team Leads, Quality Analysts, or Software Engineers. And I'm sure the growth does not end there! One of our core values is providing a great place to work and grow for our team members, and this statistic truly underscores our commitment. Excited to for next month's Black Jacket club.

Just touched down in Los Angeles after an exciting few days at AHIP 2024 in #LasVegas. It was a great conference at a fantastic venue, and after reflecting on the past few days, wanted to share a few brief takeaways here: I Attended a great session on preparing for the upcoming #HealthEquityInitiative by Annie Mayol Del Valle, Juan Montanez, and Ugo Okpewho, FSA, MAAA of FTI Consulting. The #healthequity measures will be a major challenge for payers to navigate. Many plans don’t yet have a structured way to even collect social risk factors on their members, which is the foundation for success. I couldn’t help but think about how plans should leverage digital touchpoints, but also each individual Member Service interaction, to support these initiatives. A compelling data point came from Divya Pillai of Sutherland, who pointed out that only ~5% of health plans are leveraging a #sharedservices structure. Especially in light of today’s challenges around cost structures, administrative staffing shortages, and digital transformation, finding strong external partners that can help address these issues will be more and more important It was fantastic to have impromptu encounters, long and short, with so many innovators supporting payers. Just to name a few great companies to check out: Serif Health (price transparency data - Rafiq Ahmed), Fortuna Health (very cool Medicaid enrollment/re-enrollment - Nikita Singareddy), Bold (movement as medicine - Amanda Rees), Verifiable (very interesting credentialing automation - Abhijit C. Joshi), Siftwell (analytics-as-a-service - Mark Liber) Huge shoutout to Will Hayes who relentlessly networked, prepared, and led our “AHIP Attendee Spotlight” interviews which we’ll publish here soon. It was a fantastic first outing of our new growth team led by Lauren Leslie. Thanks again to AHIP for the great event. Hopefully we’ll be back at the next one!

Healthcare companies generate billions of data points annually from disparate systems, and GenAI can help us understand large scale health equity issues. #AHIP2024

Day 1 at AHIP in Vegas - Too many learnings to cover in a post, but wanted to highlight some of the phenomenal leaders I had a chance to engage with: K. R. Prabha kicking off the day with her thoughts on growth through digital transformation. I am with you, let's put "tech spend behind retention first" and make sure we can keep our members/patients before we throttle acquisition initiatives. LaShawn McIver, MD, MPH grounding us with sobering current state health equity measures and a call to action. Our team at Third Way Health is certainly going to think more critically about our unique position to drive equitable outcomes for the hispanic population given our native bilingual team. Merith Basey holding our feet to the fire on the fact that 1 in 3 Americans cannot afford their prescription drugs. Thank you for bringing appropriate discomfort to the room - it is needed to drive change. Ingrid Lindberg and Stacy Byers keeping the energy high as we explore near-term learnings and actions to improve the overall member experience. I hope to catch you both for a follow-up as we refine our Third Way Health perspective on "what exceptional looks like" for member services and contact centers.
