Joining forces with Bridges to Prosperity, a team of Thornton Tomasetti Gives Back volunteers last month travelled to Rwanda to construct the Makurungwe trail bridge over the Musogoro River. The 64-meter-long cable-suspended bridge now provides more than 3,000 community members safe, year-round access to markets, schools, healthcare and new opportunities. From construction challenges to daily engagements with the community and local schoolchildren and the joyful inauguration, follow the link in the post below for a recap of the build. #bridgestoprosperity #B2P #volunteering
Where to begin? Last month, my team and I helped build the Makurungwe trail bridge with Bridges to Prosperity as part of the 2024 Thornton Tomasetti Gives Back service project. It’s difficult to summarize an unforgettable two weeks, but this was one of the most rewarding service projects I’ve ever done. Sometimes, I think we all forget to be grateful for the resources available to us, especially when we consider that not everyone has access to clean water or safe passage to school and work. Being part of Bridges to Prosperity reminds us of the larger issues in the world beyond our own personal struggles. The greatest takeaway from this trip for me was the spirit of community. From singing, dancing, magic tricks, and overcoming the language barrier with impressive miming, and a few simple words—the connections we made with everyone on site were absolutely beautiful. The strength, dedication, and jubilation of the Rwandan people was an experience unlike any other, and I’m very grateful to have shared it with my new friends. Learn more about the Makurungwe trail bridge here: https://lnkd.in/efRUnjZ7 We were very lucky to have a wonderful team, an amazing accommodation, and fantastic drivers and liaisons. Overall, the experience was extraordinary. I think anyone, regardless of their engineering background, would benefit from this experience. Fans got their first look at the new home of the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames at a groundbreaking ceremony this past Monday. The 18,000-seat Scotia Place, located in the Canadian city’s emerging Culture + Entertainment District, will be the focal point of a 10-block development that will feature a community ice rink, indoor and outdoor plazas, restaurants, retail shops and parking. The project team includes architects DIALOG and HOK, project manager CAA ICON, general contractors Cana Construction and Mortenson with Thornton Tomasetti, in collaboration with Entuitive, providing structural engineering services. The arena’s design celebrates the region’s indigenous heritage and incorporates the four elements of nature: fire, water, land and air. It is also being designed with sustainability features that could make the building net-zero by 2050. Scotia Place will replace ScotiaBank Saddledome, which was built in 1983 and is one of the oldest arenas in the NHL. In addition to the flames, the arena will host concerts, festivals and professional and amateur sporting events. It will also serve as home for Calgary’s junior hockey and lacrosse leagues teams. Completion is scheduled for the start of the 2027-28 NHL season. Images courtesy of DIALOG. #structuralengineering #sports

Highly sustainable and visually appealing, mass timber continues to grow in popularity as the go-to building material, but not all timber is the same. Our latest podcast (available here: https://lnkd.in/eM_pGHFy) looks at what you should consider when choosing mass timber for your project, with implications on embodied carbon, supply chains and project costs. Chris Williams, an associate principal in our Structural Engineering practice in Portland, discusses biogenic carbon storage (the carbon sequestered by trees locked in timber structures and one of wood’s unique advantages), the role of certifications like FSC and PEFC, why specifying mass timber might do more harm than good and more. You can find this and past episodes of “Here’s How: Embodied Carbon,” hosted by Corporate Responsibility Officer Amy Hattan, on Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, iHeart Radio, PodBean and Spotify. #Sustainability #EmbodiedCarbon #MassTimber #TimberConstruction #HeresHowClimateAction #HeresHowPodcast
