According to the CDC, diabetic Foot Ulcers make up 30% of all chronic wounds in the US. Of the 10% of the total American population with Diabetes, 25-35% have a chance of developing a diabetic foot ulcer in their lifetime.

Managing or preventing diabetic foot ulcers involves adopting several healthy lifestyle habits, like proper foot care. If you have diabetes or have had DFUs in the past, make it a daily habit of inspecting your feet for any cuts, sores, blisters, or changes in color or temperature. Clean your feet regularly with mild soap and lukewarm water, and gently dry them, especially between the toes.

Arterial ulcers are caused by poor blood circulation, often due to atherosclerosis or peripheral artery disease. Reduced blood flow limits the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues, preventing proper wound healing.

Today, Tides had the privilege of delivering an insightful biotech lesson to the LPSS Summer Camp students. Students learned how Tides Medical leverages biotechnology to develop innovative solutions for patients with chronic wounds.

A multidisciplinary approach involving healthcare professionals such as podiatrists, wound care specialists, and endocrinologists is often necessary to manage and treat these ulcers effectively.

The third differentiator between acute and chronic wounds are the characteristics of the wound. Acute wounds are characterized by a clear and well-defined wound bed with clean and viable tissue and exhibit signs of normal wound healing processes. Chronic wounds often feature non-viable tissue, infection, and an irregular wound bed.
