Today there are 30.2 million “small businesses” in the U.S. and “small businesses” comprise 99.9% of all U.S. businesses. (Per the S.B.A.) •their average revenue is around $44,000 per yr •2/3rds of them make less than $25,000 per yr •those w/ 4 employees avg gross revenue jumps to $387,000 per yr •those w/10-19 employees avg gross revenues of $2,164,000 per yr •the median bank account balance for a “small businesses” is only $12,100. (JP Morgan study) 3 MYTHS I HEAR ABOUT SMALL BUSINESS OWNERSHIP: 1️⃣ Being a business owner means you have more free time to do whatever you want! FALSE: you go from 40 hours a week to all hours because you can never clock out and you’re always thinking about business. 2️⃣ Being a business owner means you make a lot more money because you can pay yourself whatever you want! FALSE: as you see in the stats above, most small businesses don’t make much money at all…and your business expenses and employees’ wages/salary (and everything else) all come BEFORE you get to be paid. 3️⃣ Being a business owner means you can write everything off on your taxes. FALSE: contrary to what social media money gurus tell you, you cannot, in fact, write everything off. Case in point, I spend over $100,000 per year on tickets: for clients, employees, potential clients, etc. And $0 of that is “write-off-able!” It’s not as glamorous as you’re led to believe on social media. Don’t believe the hype. It’s a grind, and it’s nonstop. Very, very few make it to the “promised land.” Be careful what you wish for with that envy; it’s not as easy as it’s made to sound online. You’ve really gotta be ready for the battle. Ps. if you happen to work for a successful small business, remember that it’s often a lonely position as the founder/owner… so thank your boss once in a while for carrying the burden of stress for the company. You might be the first one to ever say it. :)
