This one’s a big deal. We brought a suit against Southern Airways on behalf of pilots who allege that the airline trapped them in “stay-or-pay” contracts and made them fly in unsafe conditions. Since July, the airline has sued 80 of its former pilots for totals ranging from $4,000 to $20,000. TRAPs rob workers of bargaining power and make us all less safe. We need coordinated efforts from all federal agencies, including the FAA, DOT, DOL, and FTC to take them on. “Workers need to be able to speak out about their working conditions and leave unsafe situations without being afraid that they’re going to be sued or go into debt to pay for their employers’ cost of doing business.” – Rachel Dempsey https://lnkd.in/gfEvsMhU

Yesterday, we joined Governing for Impact, the Student Borrower Protection Center, the American Economic Liberties Project, and 16 other organizations in sending a letter to the Department of Labor urging it to clarify that some “stay or pay” contracts violate the Fair Labor Standards Act. Stay-or-pay contracts have become a common ploy for exploiting workers – reducing workers’ mobility, limiting their organizing power, and locking them into unsafe or unfair working conditions. “If employers want to retain their workers, they should do so by paying them more and treating them better, not saddling them with debt indenturing them to their bosses.” – David Seligman
