Maine's oldest town, committed to building a strong, supportive and dynamic community.

About us

Kittery has the distinction of being the oldest town in the State of Maine, incorporated in 1647 -- more than a century and a quarter before the birth of the United States. Kittery remains one of the state’s most popular tourist attractions, renowned for its outlet stores and restaurants; and several of the historic Isles of Shoals and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard are a part of Kittery.

  • THANK YOU to everyone who attended the Town of #Kittery Independence Day Celebration on Saturday. It was an awesome way to come together as a community and celebrate the spirit of independence. 🗽 This year we were honored to include a reading of the historic Petition of Freedom submitted to the NH Legislature in 1779 by Whipple’s own enslaved person, Prince Whipple, and others seeking to obtain their individual liberty. 📜 ✨Having "General Whipple" and "Prince Whipple" with us, along with the Piscataqua Rangers Jr. Fife & Drum Corps, Capt. Henry Dearborn's Company of Revolution-era reenactors, the PNS Color Guard and our community members, made the event truly special. ✨ Click the link below to hear more about the event and we hope to see you next year! https://lnkd.in/eXXAAcdt Black Heritage Trail of NH | Portsmouth Naval Shipyard

A little pesky rain didn't deter this amazing group from today's roadside clean-up! A HUGE thank you to our DPW staff, the Kittery Premium Outlets volunteers, resident volunteers and our Kittery Fire Department volunteers for getting rained on while picking up waste along Route 1 in #Kittery. Our volunteers reported collecting countless cigarette butts and nip bottles along with single-use plastics (like drink cups and straw wrappers) and even a couple dirty diapers (yes, really 🙃). Please remember that what ends up on our roadsides, makes its way to our storm drains, which reach the waterbodies in town that we love so much. We encourage everyone to be mindful of trash and dispose of waste properly to protect our waters, our wildlife and each other. 🚯 We host clean-ups throughout the year, so if you missed this one, check out our volunteer page for future updates and ways to get involved at https://lnkd.in/du36VpDD.

✨ Cue the excitement because the Town of Kittery’s Books & Big Ideas Community Read Program is featured in the April Issue of Maine Municipal Association’s Maine Town & City Magazine! ✨ In every community, there will be topics and situations that arise that are both challenging to understand and to discuss. In #Kittery, we decided to explore how learning about these topics from a variety of literary perspectives, voices and stories might broaden our shared understanding of how they affect us and those around us. And that is exactly how our Books & Big Ideas Community Read Program was born! 💡 Since the program began, the Rice Public Library and Town Hall Staff have featured selected titles and hosted interactive events that tackle the topics of “Housing and the Importance of Home”, “Indigenous Peoples of Maine” and “Climate Action & Sustainability”, and we’re not slowing down!  Stay tuned for a new edition of Books & Big Ideas that we will be kicking off this summer. 📖 Think that’s exciting? We're even seeing this awesome program grow outside of Kittery. The Town of Brewster, MA is taking a page out of Kittery’s book (see what we did there 😉 ) by debuting their own version of the Books & Big Ideas program, encouraging their residents to come together to read, learn and participate in the conversations that affect their community. If you haven’t had an opportunity to read along with us, or join us at one of our author events and activities, we’d love for you to join in this summer.  Until then, you can read the Maine Town & City article here ➡ https://bit.ly/3wH2xbN Or visit the Town of Kittery website to learn more about the program at ➡ www.kitteryme.gov/reads.

Goodbye Chief/Hello Chief 🚒 ❤️ We'd like to take a moment to graciously thank Chief David O'Brien for his 49 years with the Town of #Kittery and commend him on all he's accomplished during his remarkable career. And as one Chief prepares for the adventure of retirement, we look to the future as we welcome and congratulate Kittery's new Fire Chief, Craig Alfis.

#ICYMI - On Thursday, the #Kittery Harbormaster Boat was officially named the "Hazel Sinclair" and launched into the water. ⚓ The Boat Naming Celebration event was one for the books and included friends, neighbors, community members and even Hazel & Clayton's family members who traveled from Atlanta to be with us for the occasion. 🥰 With the naming of the Harbormaster vessel, Hazel’s legacy of providing steadfast protection and comfort on land will now continue into Kittery’s waterways. We have lots of thank yous to share but for now, we'd like to extend an enormous thank you to every single person that had a hand in facilitating this incredible moment. 💙
