Check out our latest blog: The Role of Mental Health Professionals in Supporting Transgender Youth Being an inclusive and affirming mental health clinician involves continuing education on the most up-to-date best practices to support clients of all backgrounds, including those exploring their gender identity. “Affirming Mental Health Clinician”, what does this mean? LGBTQIA+ affirming mental health professionals are clinicians who have taken a therapeutic stance to affirm a client’s gender identity or sexual orientation without attempting to “repair” or “change” it. These clinicians may not necessarily be part of the LGBTQ community themselves, but rather are educated on the issues these individuals face and the best clinical modalities to support them!

Let’s talk pronouns! Why is this important? ⤵️ ❤️Pronouns affirm gender identities and help create a safe space in schools, work environments and in our community. 🧡Ask: “What pronouns do you use?” or “Can you remind me what pronouns you use?” 💛If you mess up someone’s pronouns: apologize and move on. If you feel bad that you messed up, don’t make it the other person’s responsibility! 💚Why “move on”? Drawing attention to your mistake can make a conversation more uncomfortable as the person you misgendered may feel angry/annoyed but this is not necessarily at you directly-these feelings are more often directed at the general experience of being misgendered. 💙You can’t always know a persons pronouns by looking at them. Asking someone’s pronouns is the simplest way to show your respect for their gender identity. 💜If you feel safe doing so, share your pronouns when introducing yourself to others. #mentalhealth #pronouns #pridemonth
