"The Open Orchard," Sam Van Aken's pomological public art installation on Governors Island, is definitely worth the pilgrimage—thank you, CULTURED Magazine! This unique artwork, comprised of more than 100 specially grafted hybrid fruit trees, acts as a liv­ing archive for New York City's agricultural history. During your pilgrimage, you can also experience artworks by Duke Riley, Mark Dion, Jenny Kendler, Mark Handforth, Rachel Whiteread, Sheila Berger, and Shantell Martin, all right here on Governors Island. "I want to really make sure we’re creating experiences and opportunities for people to come and experience art on the island, and then they want to come back and see what else is happening... Maybe they learned about an artist they didn’t know. Maybe they saw a performance in a space they hadn’t really had access to before. All of that is really what we think about when we’re thinking about the vision for what Governors Island Arts can do." “Other of Pearl,” Jenny Kendler's multi-sensory public art installation, opens TODAY on Governors Island 🦪🐋🌊 Presented by #GovIslandArts and Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), this exhibition trans­forms a historic, cavern-like former munitions magazine into a space for slow explo­ration. Here you will encounter sev­en inti­mate and del­i­cate works, includ­ing a hand­blown glass instru­ment where you can sing in the voice of a whale and pearl sculp­tures grown inside oys­ters. “Other of Pearl” is open every Wednesday-Sunday, 10am-5pm, through October inside Fort Jay.
