The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Grid Deployment Office has opened a $1.25M funding opportunity to accelerate offshore wind deployment along the Atlantic Coast. This initiative will standardize offshore wind transmission equipment, enabling faster project development while enhancing grid reliability and resilience. The consortium of technical experts, managed in collaboration with ConnectWerx, will guide coordinated procurement strategies, ultimately supporting the administration's goal of 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030. Today, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management announced the Final Sale Notice for offshore wind leasing in the Gulf of Maine, with an auction date set for October 29, 2024. This milestone has the ability bring 13 gigawatts of clean, reliable energy to New England, enough to power 4.5 million homes and businesses. "Offshore wind is already benefiting New England with good-paying jobs and valuable investments in ports and manufacturing,” said Turn Forward's Executive Director, Hillary Bright. “Today’s announcement takes us one step closer to expanding those benefits across more communities." Maine continues to make progress in offshore wind with UMaine’s VolturnUS floating turbine technology and a new research array in the Gulf of Maine. The array will help researchers understand how offshore wind can coexist with marine ecosystems, fisheries, and wildlife. This initiative, in partnership with Boston-based Diamond Offshore Wind and Maine’s Offshore Wind Research Consortium, focuses on gathering data that will support the responsible development of offshore wind energy in the region. These efforts are key to ensuring the growth of clean energy while protecting Maine’s local industries and environment. Learn more about this project: https://lnkd.in/gzqrA39f
