#TXSES Platinum members Sunrun are creating a customer-driven power plant in #Texas to dispatch stored solar energy from at-home batteries and increase available electricity reserves on the grid during periods of high consumption. This will be the first operational virtual power plant program in Texas and Sunrun customers are already signing up. In just one short year, #Texas managed to increase its #solar production by 50 percent, from a peak of around 13,000 megawatts produced in one day last year to last week's peak of over 20,000 megawatts—enough to power roughly 4 million homes. When the sun is at its strongest in late afternoon, solar accounts for around 20 percent of the Lone Star State's total energy production. "Having 7,000 more megawatts this year versus last year just makes a major difference," says Doug Lewin, energy consultant and author of the Texas Energy and Power Newsletter.
