EIA provides energy statistics and analyses for sound policy making, efficient markets, and public education.
About us
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) is the statistical and analytical agency within the U.S. Department of Energy. EIA collects, analyzes, and disseminates independent and impartial energy information to promote sound policy making, efficient markets, and public understanding of energy and its interaction with the economy and the environment. EIA is the Nation’s premier source of energy information and, by law, its data, analyses, and forecasts are independent of approval by any other officer or employee of the United States Government. Join our team of professionals who provide comprehensive, reliable data, analysis, and forecasts to industry, government, media, academia, and the American public. http://www.eia.gov/about/careers/

Natural gas accounted for 43% of U.S. electricity generation in 2023. Several U.S. natural gas power plant operators have taken or announced plans to take one of three steps: 🔵 Test cofiring hydrogen at existing facilities 🔵 Upgrade existing turbines to use a blend of natural gas and hydrogen 🔵 Include the capability to use a blend of natural gas and hydrogen when building new natural gas power plants #electricity #naturalgas #hydrogen

We expect that Brent crude oil prices will return to above $80 per barrel this month and will average $82 per barrel in the fourth quarter of the year. Market concerns over economic growth and oil demand have increased, but our expectation is that global oil reserves will begin to decline as OPEC+ production cuts result in global oil consumption exceeding global oil production. OPEC+ member countries announced last week that they will be delaying production increases until December. Those increases were initially set to begin next month. Other highlights from our most recent forecasts: ▶ We expect Henry Hub natural gas prices to remain relatively flat through the rest of 2024 before rising in 2025. We see prices increasing as U.S. liquefied natural gas exports rise by more than 2 billion cubic feet per day in 2025, putting stress on U.S. natural gas storage levels. ▶ We added a new set of forecasts on monthly retail propane price forecasts by U.S. region. We expect the U.S. average retail propane price for the upcoming heating season to average $2.50 per gallon, the same average price as last winter. ▶ We also added several new series of forecasts that better capture how biofuels are being consumed within overall U.S. demand for distillate fuels. We expect that biofuels will account for 9% of total distillate fuel oil consumption this year, up from 8% last year and 5% in 2022. https://lnkd.in/gYnMqJkN

U.S. exports of thermal coal to Asia and Africa surged in the first half of 2024, helping to drive overall U.S. coal exports to 53 million short tons from 49 million short tons in the first half of 2023. Exports of thermal coal from the United States to Asia increased by 19% in the first half of 2024 compared with the same period in 2023. The increase was driven mainly by greater deliveries to India and China. India accounted for 57% of these exports to Asia in 2023 and continued to receive large amounts of U.S. thermal coal in the first half of 2024, led by industrial customers in the brickmaking sector. Chinese power companies accounted for most of the rest of the increase. https://lnkd.in/dxsy93U6 #coal

North America’s LNG export capacity is on track to more than double between 2024 and 2028 if projects currently under construction begin operations as planned. 🔵 2023 LNG export capacity: 11.4 billion cubic feet per day 🔵 2028 planned LNG export capacity: 24.4 billion cubic feet per day During this time, we expect developers in Mexico and Canada to place their first LNG export terminals into service and in the United States to add to existing LNG capacity. By the end of 2028, we estimate LNG export capacity will grow by 0.6 billion cubic feet per day in Mexico, 2.5 billion cubic feet per day in Canada, and 9.7 billion cubic feet per day in the United States from a total of 10 new projects that are currently under construction in the three countries. https://lnkd.in/eMP5E_kQ #LNG #naturalgas

In the first seven months of 2024, operators added 5 gigawatts of battery storage capacity to the U.S. electric power grid. More than 20.7 GW of battery energy storage capacity was available in the United States as of July. In 2010, only 4 megawatts of utility-scale battery energy storage was added in the United States. 🔋 Why do we count battery storage in our electricity generating capacity data? 🔋 Secondary sources of electricity such as batteries provide the capacity to meet load even though energy storage systems do not generate electricity directly. https://lnkd.in/e-vamadf #electricity #batteries #batterystorage

Our forecasts for 2025: 🔵 Crude oil production in the United States will grow to an average of 13.7 million barrels per day 🔵 Marketed natural gas production will grow to an average of 114.3 billion cubic feet per day Most of the forecast growth in oil and natural gas production comes from the Permian region of western Texas and eastern New Mexico, where we expect productivity gains, new and expanded infrastructure, and high crude oil prices will support rising production. https://lnkd.in/dRzqWRcd #oil #oilproduction #naturalgas #Permian
