Logistics Update: New Dual Transaction Rules and Infrastructure Challenges at PNW Ports We wanted to bring attention to some recent challenges affecting the Pacific Northwest ports, including Tacoma. The ports have implemented new dual transaction requirements at Husky and Washington United Terminals (WUT). Under these rules, truckers can only pick up a loaded container if they return an empty container of the same size in the same transaction. While this aims to improve cargo flow, it’s creating delays as matching the right equipment has become a real obstacle. Adding to the complexity, PNW ports are facing broader infrastructure issues: Limited Hours: The ports operate on single shifts, from 8 am to 5 pm, meaning they often reach capacity before noon. This leads to early gate closures, restricting access and slowing down operations. Rail Car Shortages: There’s a significant shortage of rail cars right now, leaving thousands of containers sitting on the docks. What used to be quick rail transfers are now facing delays of up to four days. These challenges are likely to continue through the rest of the year, but at UCanTrade, we’re actively working with our clients to navigate these obstacles and keep their supply chains moving.
