About us

For 15 years, the UFW Foundation has mobilized farm workers and their organizations across the country to advocate for more equitable policies, such as immigration reform, pesticide protections, heat standards, hazard pay, and other worker protections. We engage constituents in systemic change to break the cycle of poverty while also providing critical services. In fact, the UFW Foundation is the largest federally accredited immigration legal service provider in the state of California. The organization has staff in California, Washington, Arizona, Michigan, Washington D.C. and will be expanding to Georgia.

State Senator, 15th District at State of California

As a former farmworker, I know first-hand how high the stakes are to one’s health and safety while working under extreme heat weather conditions out in the field. Without heat prevention measures in place, lives have been lost. And despite California’s landmark legislation over 19 years ago adopting and instituting heat prevention solutions in the workplace, nearly 50% of #farmworkers today still report their farming employer not complying with existing law. That is why I introduced Senate Bill 1299 (SB 1299), to bring farming employers into compliance. But more importantly, to save farmworkers’ lives. UFW Foundation #SB1299

Californians say they were fired for leaving their jobs in sweltering heat. Is the state on their side?

I’d like to thank my Senate colleagues for granting me the opportunity to recognize the Yolo Six farmworkers who were recently fired from their job for speaking up and exercising their right in the workplace in order to avoid heat injury, illness or death during today's Senate Floor Session. The lived experiences of the Yolo Six farmworkers are why I introduced my Senate Bill 1299, and why I urge both my Senate and Assembly colleagues to support my bill. UFW Foundation #UFW #Farmworkers

We are here today at the CA State Capitol in support of SB1299, a CA bill that ensures compliance with heat standards. Although CA has heat protections, nearly 50% of farm workers STILL report experiencing workplaces NOT in compliance with the protections. This is unacceptable. Farm workers need SB1299 now. Farm worker lives depend on it.

“In the end they pay what they want and they always harm us.” — Anonymous Washington farm worker This is why we need the proposed regulations from the Department of Homeland Security to Protect Farm Workers. These regulations include: - Easing H-2 workers’ ability to seek new H-2 employment, including a 60-day grace period to allow H-2 workers to seek new jobs and retain their H-2 status when leaving an abusive employer; - Strengthening prohibitions and enforcement against retaliation, mistreatment, and recruiter fees, including making it more difficult for abusive employers to hire H-2 workers in the future; and - Workers who apply for permanent residency (or ‘green card’) would not automatically lose their H-2 status. #ProtectFarmWorkers

NEW POLLING: 9 in 10 Voters Support Federal Heat Rule. ✅ “Diego Iñiguez-López, government affairs director for the UFW Foundation, said the organization, which advocates for United Farm Workers members and farmworkers in general, is “incredibly encouraged by the proposed rules.” “We know that it will save lives, that it affirms the need for basic safety and recognizes the dignity of farmworkers … based on effective state regulations that were written in the blood of farmworkers” from extreme heat, he said. Between 2018 and 2022, more than half of the 168 farmworkers who died on the job in California alone did so in temperatures above 80 degrees, according to a 2023 review by Inside Climate News.” Join us in advocating for heat protections for farm workers this year. #CALOR https://lnkd.in/gj8c5J9s
