🚸Now Playing: The Invisible Pedestrian 🚸 A new National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS 127) mandates that by 2029, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) must be implemented in all light vehicles (under 10,000 lbs) and they must pass specific tests to be deemed roadworthy. These tests focus on avoiding vulnerable road users (VRUs), including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists. Similarly, Europe’s New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP) emphasizes the need to enhance Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for real-world scenarios. These real-world conditions tests cannot be passed without the next generation of imaging radar technology. So why do current radar systems struggle to reliably detect VRUs? VRUs typically generate weak radar signatures and are often stationary or slow-moving, making them difficult to distinguish from surrounding static objects. Additionally, VRUs are frequently situated near larger objects, such as trucks, which produce stronger radar signatures that can overshadow the weaker ones from VRUs. The ability to differentiate a VRU next to a strong reflector, like a child standing beside a truck, is measured by a metric known as “Contrast Resolution.” Traditional analog radars face challenges in achieving High Contrast Resolution (HCR). Analog radars produce a broad signal response with side lobes, making it hard to differentiate between small and large targets that are close together. In contrast, Digital Code Modulation (DCM) radar uses a digital code waveform with special properties, generating a signal response with two distinct peaks—one large (e.g., the truck) and one small (e.g., the VRU)—clearly separating the two targets. This new digital modulation technology significantly enhances ADAS performance, particularly in complex urban environments. #automotive #radar #ADAS #TrafficSafety #VehicleSafety #AutomotiveTechnology #ImagingRad #EuroNCAP

Imaging Radar: A Game Changer for the Future of Safety In the race towards safer roads and smarter vehicles, imaging radar based on Uhnder technology is emerging as a pivotal advancement. First generation imaging radar based on legacy analog modulation is already safeguarding cars today.  However, this advanced safety is limited only to premium luxury cars due to the high radar cost.   The new 4D Imaging radar based on digital code modulation, scales this to the next level by offering higher resolution, improved object detection with a higher contrast ratio, and best-in-class interference mitigation - all affordable now for mass market. The resulting widespread adoption will lead to safer roads for everyone, reducing accidents and saving lives. Imaging radar is not just an upgrade—it's a revolution in vehicle safety that will reshape how we drive and how our cars interact with the world around them. #adas #radar #automotivesafety #automotive #NHTSA

🚗🚗 Untangling the Airwaves: Tackling Radar Interference for Safer Roads🚗🚗 Automotive radars are vital for ADAS safety, but their effectiveness is significantly compromised by interference from other radars on the road, severely limiting their utility. This poses significant safety risks and degrades radar performance by causing unnecessary alerts, driver distraction, and potential non-detection of critical objects like pedestrians or other vehicles. In the absence of regulatory interference standards, several signal processing techniques are being developed to reduce radar interference.  However, these approaches have yet to be widely applied in production radars due to their complexity and high computational cost.  Effective and efficient interference mitigation strategies are essential for ensuring the safety and reliability of automotive radar systems.  Uhnder’s solution based on Digital Code Modulation (DCM) is natively interference resilient. This advantage uniquely positions DCM as the technology of choice for mass market imaging radar.   #AutomotiveRadar #ADAS #Road #safety #radar
