We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Brigadier General (BG) Matt Peterson, one of our Air National Guard (ANG) Medical Service Corps (MSC) Officers, as he retires. His distinguished, 34-year long career as a Citizen Airmen exemplifies dedication, leadership, and service. Some highlights from his extraordinary career include: · Distinguished himself by serving as both an Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron Commander and as a Medical Group Commander. · Deployed six times, facilitating an astounding 700 aeromedical evacuation missions and ensuring the safe transport of over 7,000 patients. · Performed as an International Health Specialist, a specialty role within the Air Force Medical Service, planning and executing global health engagements across all six geographic combatant commands. · Achieved historic milestones for the MSCs in the ANG:  earned full Joint Qualification and was the 1st MSC to be promoted to the rank of Brigadier General through the National Guard Assistant Program. · Part of the leadership team that established of Air Force Medical Command, a new organizational structure. · Excelled in high-level, demanding careers in both the military and civilian healthcare sectors, most recently serving as the ANG Assistant to the Deputy Air Force Surgeon General and as the Executive Vice President and Divisional President of a Fortune 300 hospital management company that owns and operates over 400 acute care and behavioral hospitals worldwide. Reflecting on his remarkable journey, BG Peterson is most proud of the people he’s worked with and met along the way, and he remains in awe of their dedication and selflessness. Here are a few key take-aways he’d like to pass on to the next generation: · Time in Service vs Core Competencies - Whether serving for 4 years or 3 decades:  expertise, drive, and the right attitude are paramount. · Value of MSCs In and Out of Uniform - Military experiences equip us with highly marketable skills, which has enabled his success as a civilian healthcare professional. · Readiness is the Future - Consider specializing in this functional area. Our nation relies on individuals who embrace this calling. · Embrace Risk and Drive Innovation - Fearlessness drives progress. Future leaders should take risks, challenge the status quo, and foster innovation. · Enjoy the Journey - We have the best job in the Air Force. Enjoy the ride, savor the moments, and continue making a difference. · Leverage the Total Force - Collaboration across the components—Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard—enhances our collective strength. We are truly better together! BG Peterson, you’ve left an indelible mark on the Air Force Medical Service and the broader military community. Thank you for your selflessness, dedication, and unwavering service!
