SXSW PANELPICKER: JUST THE FACTS!! PanelPicker community voting closes at 11:59 pm Pacific Time on Sunday, August 18. panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote Ten facts to know about this long-standing exercise in user generated content are as follows. 1) HISTORY OF THIS INTERFACE. PanelPicker was first launched in 2007 (the initial version of the interface was much more rudimentary than what currently exists). Much of the inspiration for the PanelPicker came from the community features pioneered by the online t-shirt company Threadless. 2) ADDING VIDEO. One of the big improvements to this interface in recent years is the addition of video functionality. This addition gives the community a much better understanding of the speaking experience (and energy) of the proposed presenter or the proposed panelists. 3) PANELPICKER PROPOSALS POWER SXSW! Today, speaking proposals that come through the PanelPicker account for about 70% of the content at the SXSW Conference. The other 30% of SXSW Conference content is curated by staff. 4) COMMUNITY VOTING. Anyone can take part in community voting. Just log in to your PanelPicker account. If you don't have an account, setting one up is quick, easy and free! But don't delay because the PanelPicker community voting process concludes at the end of the day on Sunday, August 18. See panelpicker.sxsw.com/vote 5) COMMENTS ROCK! The community can also comment on speaking proposals that they like (or dislike). The SXSW staff and the PanelPicker Evaluator Committee spend a lot of time reading these comments. 6) SEARCH FUNCTIONALITY. Users are encouraged to browse all 4600+ speaking proposals in the PanelPicker. If you don't have quite that much time, we recommend that you use the search bar at the top of the page to find the proposals that match your interests and your passions. 7) STAFF AND PANELPICKER EVALUATOR COMMITTEE. While community voting is important, each PanelPicker proposal is also reviewed by SXSW staff and by the PanelPicker Evaluator Committee. A total numerical grade for each proposal is determined that combines all three of these inputs. 8) ANNOUNCEMENT DATE FOR ACCEPTED IDEAS. In late October, we will announce which of the 4600+ speaking proposals in this year's interface will be part of the 2025 SXSW Conference. This announcement will occur via sxsw.com. Dates for next year's Conference are Friday, March 7 through Thursday, March 13 in always-sunny Austin, Texas. 9) PROPOSALS THAT MISS OUT. If your speaking proposal doesn't make it through this very competitive process, then you will have a chance to register to attend SXSW 2025 at the lowest rate. 10) SXSW SYDNEY AND SXSW LONDON. Variations of the PanelPicker interface and process are also being used by SXSW Sydney (October 14-20, 2024) and SXSW London (June 2-7, 2025) to source content.
