Strengthening governance systems can unlock transformative climate action. By investing in rule of law, effective institutions, and inclusivity, we can ensure equitable impacts of climate mitigation. Immediate policy actions can make a difference. Our latest report with the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) offers insights from across the globe about how inclusive, effective and accountable governance systems produce positive effects on climate action. The report aims to galvanize development actors and stakeholders to invest in SDG 16 - on peace, justice and strong institutions - and the strengthening of governance systems, and to better identify pathways that raise the ambition and effectiveness of climate action. When crisis hits, aid workers step in and step up. From day one, they’re on the ground providing food, water and shelter to affected communities. Importantly, they’re also working hard to lay the foundations for recovery by helping communities restart their lives. This ranges from rebuilding homes, roads, hospitals and other essential infrastructure to providing opportunities to work, retrain and earn a living, and making sure people can access the services they need.  Yet, the challenges they face in doing their jobs are immense. Last year was the deadliest year on record for aid workers, with 595 victims of attacks, including 280 tragic deaths. Sadly, 2024 is shaping up to be even worse. From Afghanistan to Ukraine, Libya, Haiti and beyond, UNDP teams are on the ground, working closely with our humanitarian partners to help people respond to and recover from crisis. On #WorldHumanitarianDay, meet UNDP staff who continue to serve on the frontlines, navigating challenges, adapting and being innovative, with a goal of making a positive contribution for their communities: https://go.undp.org/4uT

The healthcare system in #Gaza is facing a total collapse due to the war. We have supported employment opportunities for hundreds of medical staff in Gaza. "Working during wartime is incredibly difficult. We must balance our duty to help patients with our duty to our families. Being part of this project has allowed me to support and aid my people and my country during these times of war." Hospitals and medical personnel must be protected.

Somalia has faced decades of armed conflict, social and political instability, and the negative impacts of climate change. Addressing the country's challenges requires tackling the root causes and investing in resilient communities, systems, and institutions that thrive without partners’ inputs or resources. An approach that promotes Somali-owned, Somali-led, integrated interventions is essential. And local governments and communities are key to driving development forward. UNDP Somalia's Resident Representative Lionel Laurens spotlights our work to implement Area Based Integrated Programmes (ABIP) to strengthen the social contract between people and their governments by enhancing security, fostering accountability, delivering essential services, empowering and engaging women, youth, and civil society and supporting livelihoods and job creation.
