“My mother tore her worn cotton saree and asked me to use it when I got my first periods. During this time of the month, I was asked to live in secrecy,” says 14-year-old Namita from India. Without proper knowledge of menstruation, menstrual products and hygiene, her mother was unable to guide her well. It was only when she went to school anxious and confused, that she received counselling on good menstrual practices. With support from partners, UNICEF is working to increase awareness about menstrual hygiene management in schools, ensuring that girls like Namita have access to the knowledge and resources they need for a healthier and more confident future.

“The water bucket was heavy and carrying it for a long while was taxing on our small bodies. Sometimes we were even late for school,” says 12-year-old Esterline from Madagascar. Until a few years ago, she had to walk 30 minutes every day to fetch water for her family. Thanks to support from UNICEF and partners, her village now has water points right at their doorstep, saving her time and energy for what truly matters – her education.

⚠️ In 2023, Sudan witnessed the highest number of verified grave violations against children in more than a decade. ⚠️ About 72 per cent of violations involved the killing and maiming of children, followed by recruitment and use of children by armed groups and sexual violence. ⚠️ Girls have shouldered a particularly heavy burden, facing terrifying risks to their safety, including rape and other forms of sexual violence. This violence must stop. The children of Sudan need a ceasefire NOW.

In north Gaza, the final phase of the first round of the polio vaccination campaign by UNICEF, UNRWA, WHO and partners started yesterday. Families are committed to seeing their children be vaccinated, with high turnouts in all phases. Continued area-specific humanitarian pauses are vital in ensuring that at least 90% of all children are vaccinated.
