A startling 57 percent of people in the LGBTQ+ community have reported that they or an LGBTQ+ loved one has been threatened or have experienced harassment and a trailing 51 percent have experienced violence due to their sexual or gender identity. While sheer statistics cannot encapsulate the social pressures that the LGBTQ+ community experiences, they certainly do speak to the multiple variables that can exacerbate emotional distress for youth in the LGBTQ+ community. To combat this issue, the first step is awareness. September is National Suicide Prevention Month and Unité could not be more excited to present out 988 Send Hope Challenge!!! In honor of this month, we are setting a major goal of creating 988 cards with hopeful and positive messages that we will then distribute to patients in psychiatric units and hospitals around the nation! The number 988 is thoughtfully chosen as it is symbolized 988--the national suicide and prevention lifeline! If you are interested in joining us and supporting our goal of creating 988 cards for suicide prevention, please reach out to our email at [email protected] or comment below! If you work with transitional aged youth, whether that is through a school club, organization, and/or more, this is an amazing way to help our youth get involved in hopes of fostering emotional wellbeing within the broader community! Looking forward to hearing from you all and never forget to take care of yourself first and foremost!
