Now that summer’s here, it’s important to understand the relationship between air pollution, asthma, and allergies. While pollution doesn’t cause asthma or allergies directly, it can certainly make symptoms worse for those with pre-existing conditions. Since summer months typically see an increase in ozone and particles in the air, it’s critical for those with respiratory challenges to be aware of pending forecasts and take precautions when the Air Quality Index exceeds 101, which is considered dangerous for people with allergies and especially asthma. Summer is here! And unfortunately, that means summer allergies are as well. Nothing foils a backyard barbecue like the sniffing, sneezing, and itchy eyes that make it downright unpleasant to be outside. During the warm summer months, pollens from grasses, weeds, and trees are primary allergy triggers, as are mold spores, which thrive in heat and humidity. Avoidance (especially on high pollen count days) and over-the-counter medications are reasonable first steps to help fight allergy symptoms, but they don’t work for everyone. In such cases, it’s important to get tested so specific triggers can be identified. Once they are, they become easier to avoid, and a treatment protocol can be created to minimize symptoms. Immunotherapy is a proven approach that helps the body build a tolerance to specific allergens over time.
