About us
Founded at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations is an international organization made up of 193 Member States committed to maintaining international peace and security. Every day the UN works to tackle global challenges and deliver results for those most in need. Giving life-saving support to populations hit by humanitarian crises, helping build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas, supporting governments and their citizens to advance development and fight poverty, and promoting human rights worldwide are the core pillars of the work of the United Nations and the mandates it receives from its Member States. The Charter of the United Nations is available in full at: http://www.un.org/en/documents/charter/

Education is the single-most important investment any country can make. But the global crisis in education has shown little sign of abating. 84 million children are likely to remain out of school by 2030. 70% of children in sub-Saharan Africa are unable to read a basic text by age 10. Something has to change. Ahead of September’s Summit of the Future, I have put forward a plan to end the global education crisis by: Closing the financing gap. Closing the access gap. Supporting teachers. Rethinking education systems. Every child and young person deserves an education. No matter where they live. No matter who they are.

Our human family is growing. The world’s population is projected to peak in the mid-2080s, increasing from 8.2 billion people in 2024 to approximately 10.3 billion before it begins to decline. A new report from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs also highlights that by the late 2070s people aged 65 and older will outnumber children. Thursday is the first-ever International Day of Reflection and Commemoration of the 1995 Genocide in Srebrenica. The Srebrenica massacre marked one of the darkest chapters of the war that followed the breakup of the former Yugoslavia. Over 8,000 lives were lost, thousands of people were displaced and families and communities were devastated. “May the memory of Srebrenica strengthen our resolve to build a world free from the scourge of genocide —a world where justice and peace prevail, where ‘never again’ is a solemn promise fulfilled for all humanity,” said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. https://lnkd.in/eQdYwhqQ

For humanity to progress, everyone must be counted, no matter where they are or who they are. Yet, for millions —the world’s most vulnerable among them— this right continues to go unrealized. On Thursday’s World Population Day, United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) explains why inclusive data-collection processes are more important than ever, ensuring that everyone is counted in all their diversity. https://lnkd.in/e7v74zWH

Digital technology and infrastructure depend heavily on raw materials, and the production and disposal of more and more devices, along with growing water and energy needs are taking an increasing toll on the planet. Developing countries bear the brunt of the environmental costs of digitalization while reaping fewer benefits. New UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) report underscores the urgent need for environmentally sustainable and inclusive digitalization strategies.
