A mind is a terrible thing to waste, but a wonderful thing to invest in.

About us

UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. During its 80-year existence, UNCF has raised more than $6 billion and helped more than 500,000 students not just attend college, but thrive, graduate and become leaders. To serve youth, the community and the nation, UNCF supports students’ education and development through scholarships and other programs, supports and strengthens its 37 member colleges and universities, and advocates for the importance of minority education and college readiness. While totaling only 3% of all colleges and universities, UNCF institutions and other historically Black colleges and universities are highly effective, awarding 15% of bachelor’s degrees, 5% of master’s degrees, 10% of doctoral degrees and 19% of all STEM degrees earned by Black students in higher education. UNCF administers more than 400 programs, including scholarship, internship and fellowship, mentoring, summer enrichment, and curriculum and faculty development programs. Today, UNCF supports more than 50,000 students at over 1,100 colleges and universities across the country. Its logo features the UNCF torch of leadership in education and its widely recognized trademark, ‟A mind is a terrible thing to waste.”® Learn more at UNCF.org or for continuous updates and news, follow UNCF on Instagram at @UNCF.

When historically Black college and university (HBCU) presidents founded UNCF (United Negro College Fund) in 1944, only small numbers of Black students were admitted to predominantly White American colleges and universities. Our founders knew that a college education was important, and they created UNCF to raise dollars to support HBCUs and the hundreds of thousands of students who attended them.   For 79 years, UNCF has worked tirelessly to support America’s HBCUs and their students. We have raised over $5 billion and supported more than 500,000 students on their college journeys. HBCUs have built Black America’s middle class, and UNCF scholarships have helped students pay for their college degrees and move upward economically.   Along the way, HBCUs and UNCF have urged all American colleges and universities to provide educational opportunity to Black and other students of color. Why? Because we believe that all higher education institutions have an important role to play to ensure equitable educational opportunity for students who, because of race, have been marginalized and excluded.   📢 The Supreme Court's affirmative action ruling will close the door to educational opportunity for many Black students and students of color who want to attend non-HBCUs. With this ruling, more students will turn to HBCUs. America needs HBCUs now more than ever, and UNCF needs all Americans’ support to do our important work. Meet Lorraine Mayhew Hinds, a donor who included UNCF in her estate plans. Mrs. Hinds believed in the power of education. She taught third grade, was a reading lab teacher, and retired as an administrator in the Bronx. Throughout her life, Mrs. Hinds was a strong advocate for equitable access to higher education and particularly for helping underserved students. Mrs. Hinds’ estate designated UNCF as the beneficiary of her teacher’s retirement fund, and it will help countless students in their journeys toward achieving college degrees. UNCF is truly grateful for Mrs. Hinds’ remarkable life spent educating children and for her commitment to UNCF’s mission. We will proudly realize her legacy by helping deserving students get to and through college. Environmental Justice Researcher & Founder, Morehouse College Alumnus, Program Manager at the Interstate Renewable Energy Council

Hey everyone, I want to take the opportunity to give you all some updates on what I have been up to as of late. This past May, I graduated from Morehouse College, Magna Cum Laude on a full-ride scholarship with great thanks to the UNCF and the Michael Lomax. In my final, and arguably hardest semester at Morehouse, I was able to conduct and present research on climate resilience and sustainability practices in rural communities of Puerto Rico, including my family's hometown. In addition, thanks to your support and my amazing team and mentors, I successfully won First Place in the Impact First Ventures Competition and the HBCU Founders Initiative in Washington, D.C. bringing over $20,000 for my startup Añadir. We are aiming to transform organic waste into valuable materials for environmental remediation, and this accomplishment serves as a catalyst for us to make strides in our research and development. Upon returning home to New Jersey to spend some time with my family, I was given the honor of presenting the keynote speech to the graduating class of 2024 at my alma mater, Philip's Academy Charter School in Newark, NJ. It was an invaluable experience to be able to speak to the young adults at the place where I once called my second-home, and provide perspective on the road ahead. Just a few weeks later, I began my part-time position as a Program Manager with the Interstate Renewable Energy Council (IREC), where I manage and support initiatives to expand clean energy and local markets across the nation, specifically in Disadvantaged Communities. Just this past week I got to meet members of the amazing team leading IREC's work in Puerto Rico, and learn about the opportunities for impact that I hope to make concerning the wellbeing and sustainability of these regions. Finally, I gained acceptance into Columbia University, which I will start in New York, and I am looking forward to all that I can learn and achieve through their amazing resources and network. That is all for now, but I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way. If it were not for the small interactions and smiles that I got from my circle everyday amidst some of my most daunting moments, I would not be here where I am today. With gratitude, Tyler

UNCF is thrilled to announce the launch of Project ACCLAIM (Accelerating Learning in Asset Investment Management), a pioneering initiative designed to cultivate a strong pipeline of students from HBCUs into the financial services industry. This groundbreaking program, launching at Morehouse College and Howard University in fall 2025, is made possible by a generous $10 million gift from Adage Capital Management and philanthropists Elizabeth and Phill Gross. The announcement was made during UNCF’s Harborview chat in Martha’s Vineyard, where Phill Gross, Co-Founder and Managing Director of Adage Capital Management, Kim Godwin, Former President of ABC News and career journalist, Mellody Hobson, Co-CEO and President of Ariel Investments, and Dr. Michael Lomax, President and CEO of UNCF, discussed advancing Black wealth and economic mobility. Together, we are committed to shaping the future of HBCU students in finance. ℹ️Read the full announcement: https://lnkd.in/efSKStBd #UNCF #ProjectACCLAIM #HBCUExcellence #FinancialServices
