When children receive a high-quality early education, they are set on a path to thrive as adults. Yet 59% of households earning below the ALICE survival threshold have not enrolled their child in preschool. That's why United Way of Southern Maine is investing more than $1.4 million into local programs and initiatives, mobilization, and organizational support to close gaps and increase access to child care. Our Early Learning Partners: Adopt A School Initiative, Biddeford Ready, Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Maine, Catherine Morrill Day Nursery, Catholic Charities Maine, Count ME In Maine, Food for All Services, Girl Scouts of Maine, Kids First Center, LOCKER PROJECT, Northeast Hearing & Speech Center, Our Place, Portland Starting Strong, First4ME, Gerald E. Talbot Community School, Sanford-Springvale YMCA, Sexual Assault Response Services of Southern Maine (SARSSM), Spurwink, The Opportunity Alliance, Thrive2027, York County Community Action Corporation, Youth & Family Outreach, and Youth Full Maine.

United Way of Southern Maine and UNITED WAY OF AROOSTOOK were in Washington, DC this week to share learnings across United Ways as well as advocate for policies that help the 42% of Maine households struggling to make ends meet. We had great meetings with the offices of the congressional delegation and were fortunate to get this photo with Senator Angus S. King, Jr. We also had the opportunity to hear from United Way President and CEO Angela F. Williams, JD, M.Div who inspired us in so many ways, but in part by invoking Shirley Chisholm, who said “service is the rent we pay for the privilege of living on this earth." Sarah Duncan and Jared Gay are excellent ambassadors for the work United Way does. #ALICE #LIVEUNITED #UNITEDWAY #COMMUNITY #FINANCIALHARDSHIP #SERVICE
